Acclaim Licenses for sale
« on: December 07, 2005, 06:57:23 am »
218 game licenses being auctioned off:

http://www.maltzauctions.com/acclaimip.htm

I saw this list 2 weeks ago and it hasn't changed since then. Either they don't update their page much, or there isn't very much demand for these games.

They probably aren't accepting bids under $5000, since I didn't see anything cheaper than that.

Otherwise I would try to steal the rights to NBA Jam or something for $10

Reading through that list reminds me of why Acclaim entered bankruptcy to begin with. They sure did churn out a lot of crap.

you guys realize they are selling publishing rights, not ownership/copyright.

Wouldn't matter to me if they were giving it away.

Publishing rights for most, but I think Re-Volt is theirs.

I saw that a couple days ago. I wish there were more details on what you actually get. For example, alot of those are licensed properties. Are they slicing up the licensing contracts and selling those along with the product IP?? Otherwise what good does it do to buy publishing rights to old Simpsons NES games if the Simpsons license now belongs to some other company? Or for that matter what good does rights to a NES game do if you can't port it!?!

Unfortunately looks like you probably have to hire an IP lawyer and send them down to the warehouse in order to figure out what "rights" you're really getting.

NO MORE!!

But say I bought the NBA Jam series for $5000, could I then self publish them with say a nice spiffy frontend and emulator?

If anything, this seems like a good thing for starroms to look into.  Acclaim may have churned out some crap recently, but remember, although they didn't make many games, back in the snes/nes days they published nearly all the great hits, including virtually every wwf game and the mortal kombat series, up until umk3.  Of course I don't really see those titles there... looks like they are selling crap (aka mary kate and ashley)

They're also selling crap I've worked on. If I were loaded I'd buy the rights then just donate the ROMs to public domain. Though really, I bet there's more red tape involved that would prevent that. (How would Warner Bros feel if a game using their characters were put into public domain???)

It is possible to give it away free WITHOUT putting it into the public domain. It is very simple, if you own the publishing rights then publish the sucker. Put up a web store and everything. Offer two options in the web store, download (cost $0.00) or have it mailed on CD (cost like $10). You can give it away without giving up the rights.

You could offer it as a non-expiring "trial"  ;).
