Another "do u remember" questions.
« on: December 03, 2005, 02:26:40 pm »
What was the first 'computer' game that made you realize there might be more to life than atari adventure?

For me it was star raiders.  Blew us away.  Dad bought an atari 800 on the spot even though it was more than the house was worth :)

Castle Wolfenstein on Atari 800. A long game with fixed amount of ammunition, ability to use disguises, ability to search bodies, and a distinct ending.
It just blew me away. I played through it 4 or 5 times.

I loved Adventure on the VCS too. In those times, anything with an ending appealed to me. The fact that Wolfenstein had an ending and took days to complete was just amazing for me at that time.

Castle wolfenstein was awesome.  You could "hold up" the guards and rob them, then blow their heads off anyway.  Can't imagine how many hours I played of that.

I remember playing California Games on an old apple and thought the home computer was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.  Now whenever I see California games on whatever system, I still really want to play it.

Exodus: Ultima III on my friend's Atari 800 and almost simultaneously (in my memory anyway) Pirates! on my Tandy 1000EX (which I still have, and is still a great game).

Ultima I one the Apple//e. (23 years ago - geeze).  I took notes and wrote hints and locations down.  Seemed like it took a year to finish but Im sure it was probably only a month or so.  Then Ultima 3 and 4.

Theres more to life than "Adventure?"

I guess it'd be one of these.

Kings Quest
Zork
The early Ultimas (the games came with cloth maps... what could be cooler?)
Akalabeth (OK, I'm a Lord British fan - although I hear his new games are teh suck)
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Zork and Parsec in my third grade classroom... we were allowed to play on a very limited basis if we completed our week's worth of work by Thursday afternoon and achieved a high enough score on it.

All of the Infocom Text Adventures pretty much made me realize that gaming was not all about "good graphics".
