Mamewah games list? Also site with game images?
« on: December 02, 2005, 01:03:44 pm »
I finally played my cab for the first time last night but want to tweak Mamewah a little.  The first thing I want to do is create a list of game genres.

For example, I want a sports game list, fighters list, vector games, etc. etc. instead of a list of several games to weed through.  Can that be done in Mamewah?  If so, how?

I also dont want to bloat the machine with 300 games I will never play.  I was hoping to find a site that has the name of the game, rom name, and a screen shot to help jog my memory and decide if that is a game I want in the cab.

Any suggestions?

THanks

You can use a catver.ini file to create custom lists based on many different criteria. KLOV (Killer List of Video Games) is a site that list video games and information about them.

Found a "complete" list of ROMS for an older version of mame, definately not up to date.  But its a good start.

Use listgen to create your Mamewah format lists by Catver.ini category.  Its great and if you write a nice Bat file to launch it all it becomes a 1-button update everytime you need to re-generate your lists.

As for weeding the list down, its easy to eliminate clones and unplayables with listgen... maybe some years you don't want, mahjong, quiz, whatever.  You can also take out sub-categories that you dislike if you want like fighter/puzzle or something.

You will still have alot of games in your lists but you are on the right track.

Maybe from here you then go through each of your genre lists and create a favorites list manually or something or better yet create a separate favorites list for each genre and when you are done just hide the "master" genre lists so none of your guests bump into them... this will be the best of all worlds and I believe the newest Mamewah allows for a huge number of lists so that won't be a problem.

(Or you can search this forum for my list99.bat documentation to create a single on-the-fly catver.ini category based list (using listgen)in Mamewah... )

OK - still having problems with custom lists in Mamewah, after trying to figure it out, I found a video tutorial on where to put the catver file and what mamewah options to select.

http://www.screenshotarchive.com/mwtutorial.htm

However, after watching the tutorial, several of the Game List Options (Custom Games List in particular) shown in the video are not there on my machine. ( I am aware that the video is for an older version of Mamewah)

What am I missing or need to do different?  I am using version 1.61 and mame 0.99.

Set up atleast 3 ini files named something like mame-0, mame-1, mame-2.

I have them for All games, Filtered, Favorites. If you want more lists for sports, platformers, fighters....etc, then make more files along the convention of mame-3, mame-4, mame-5.

You need a file for every list you want to make. These must be named the same as your ini file for that emulator. In this case, you'd have an ini file named mame.

Make sure to link the pathway to your catver.ini file in your mame.ini as it specifies. Without that file you cannot sort by categories.
