New Addition - Battle Shark (TAITO)
« on: November 27, 2005, 02:48:08 pm »
Bright and early this morning (OK, it was neither bright nor early), I yanked the seats out of the van, grabbed my coffee and headed off down the 401 to Beachville, Ontario. 85 minutes later I arrived to meet atarijeff, who was wearing ... surprise, surprise ... an Atari shirt.

After spending some time snooping through his shop (which contains not one, but two, nearly complete ADs, along with a Galaga, Galaxian and other goodies), we loaded the latest addition into my van and I headed back down the highway.

If anybody tells you that Battle Shark is heavy, take them at their word ... it is HEAVY and weighted to the front. Also, the bloody cabinet is too deep to tip back in low ceiling environments (like my basement). I almost lost it going down the stairs, but finally managed to get it safely into the basement/games room/office/construction zone/workshop.

Thanks to atarijeff for a great deal (for this cabinet and for the AD that I hope he'll sell me at some point) and to menace for fixing the monitor, even if it was a 2 second fix. My son hasn't stopped playing it since I got it downstairs ... it's just sitting in the middle of the room.

Cheers.

Cool game. I used to be able to beat it on one quarter. When I was in high school in the early 90's I worked at a laundromat that had Battle Shark and Capcom Bowling, along with some pinball machine that I can't remember the name of. I wasn't interested in the pinball machine at all, (never have much cared for pinball) and I wasn't really interested in the two video games either, as I was big into SFII at the time and nothing else.

Well, boredom got the best of me and after a while I was good at both Capcom Bowling and Battle Shark, and ended up liking both games quite well. Never got a perfect game on Capcom Bowling but I was close (280-something) and like I said, I got so I could beat Battle Shark on one quarter.

:P

He can stop crying ... the cabinet is currently dead ... just went to power it up for a quick game and got sound and coin lights for a few seconds, then nothing. Fortunately, it is a no lights, no monitor neck glow, no nothing problem.

I've replaced the plug, which had a small nick in it (no way anybody could have seen it without looking very closely), but that hasn't didn't do it.

Fuses looked OK, but I replaced 'em anyway.

Nothing.

The power cord runs into what looks like a filter of some flavour before it gets split into anything else. It's a bit corroded, so is an obvious place to look next.

Time to learn something new ...

Cheers.

damn sorry to hear that!  so is there any juice at the power supply?  I had one blow up on me and i just swapped a cap out and it was fine after that.  Here's hoping its a simple fix!

It'll be fine ... the thing that is really new for me is the additional power supplies and relays to run the flashing red lights and force feedback on the periscope -- I need to track the power sources for all of those.

I'm 90% certain it's the filter (if that is indeed what that little block is) -- that's the only thing the power cord runs into before it splits off to the ISO, the switcher and the auxiliaries.

If I supply power to the switcher directly, she plays blind, so I think I'm still in good shape. No blown fuses is a decent omen.

Was still a great deal in any event ... I'l yank the little box out and run down to A1 Electronics and see what they tell me.

Cheers.

Cheers.

WOW, that cabinet is quite the brute.  Glad I didn't volunteer to help you move it!

Good luck getting it back up and going.  I'm sure it can't be anything to complicated.

OK ... I pulled the filter and ran down to A1 where I was properly chastisted for not putting an ohmmeter across it first ... it's fine. I checked the replacement power cord and it was bad (strange, but OK). Replaced with a known good cord and she comes up and played blind.

Checked the fuse on the monitor chassis and it was blown. Replaced it with known good fuse and still nothing.

Checked the power coming off of the ISO and found 115V.

So, monitor isn't working (no neck glow), but everything else is.

Time to read up on monitor repair ... at least until I pick up my personal holy grail machine on the weekend ...

Cheers.

Sorry ... been trying to avoid actually saying it because this is the machine that I have always wanted (despite completely sucking at the game) and I'm afraid to jinx it.

I am buying Gravitar's Joust cocktail ...

http://home.quickclic.net/~mranger/joustct.htm

And then I need to seal up the back stairs for the winter (no more cabs until spring) and work on finishing projects and repairing the monitor on Battle Shark.

Cheers.

Cool man. As you know I have an interest in a Joust cocktail too. But no way I'm paying what he wants for it!  :D  Enjoy it! It's a beautiful table.

Yep ... was more than I wanted to pay (especially given the timing of Christmas and my list of incomplete projects), but I came up with all sorts of ways to justify it ("well, if I don't buy Terry's black Pac Man ..." ... really ridiculous stuff like that) ... those, and a couple of bottles of red wine, made the decision much easier.  ;)

Cheers.

hey cheffo on that battle shark--have a look at the filter cap on the monitor chassis (large black one) it looked bulgy to me when i saw it but everyone says they never go so i left well enough alone--if you have a capacitance checker on your dmm you can check it in circuit i believe.
