AdvanceMenu/Mame with Sanyo EZ-20 Monitor
« on: November 26, 2005, 08:57:08 pm »
Hello everyone.

Found this message board last night, and it's fantastic.  I'm really hoping someone out there has already done what I'm trying to do, and can offer some help.  :)

This weekend, I tried to change my Mame cabinet setup, which has been working well since 1998, but had some trouble with certain ROMs.  I was hoping an upgrade would let me play them.

Here's my old setup.  Using a converted Donkey Kong cabinet with a Sanyo/Nintendo EZ-20 19" monitor.  I'm running everything under DOS (Windows '98 version) and was using Mame 036B and ArcadeOS 2.35 as a front end.  My video card is an ATI Rage Pro Turbo (AGP).  Like I said, this setup worked great for about seven years.  I just got tired of not being able to play certain games, and thought an upgade was in order.

I ended up with AdvanceMame 0.101.0 for DOS, and AdvanceMenu 2.4.11.  Everything worked great using a flat-panel computer monitor to set up and test everything.  Then came time to run advcfg.exe to configure it for my Sanyo EZ-20.

I have no idea what my active, front porch, sync, and back porch settings are, and I would love to use them if anyone has them available.

Since I didn't have these settings, and I read here that the "Arcade Standard CGA (15 kHz)" settings should work, I used that for my config.  When I hooked up my Sanyo, I could make out the center/settings menu, so I used the keyboard to center the image.  When I hit return, the picture got very bad.  To me, it looked like two mirror images, split vertically.  Each image also appears to suffer from an hsync problem.

I know my video card/monitor combo works, I think I just need the proper settings for AdvanceMenu.  Can anyone help?

p.s. the reason I didn't stay with mame/arcadeos was that I couldn't find a more recent dos version of mame than 69B and when I tried that with ArcadeOS 2.52, my list of roms was always 0.  I tried all the suggestions to get that to work (rompath, legacygen, etc.) with no luck.  :(

I got to thinking and was wondering if my own monitor controls weren't to blame.

Here's a digital picture of advcfg.exe running on my Sanyo EZ-20.

http://www.digitalin-site.com/pics/ez20.jpg (91kb)

Here are the settings displayed by advcfg:

modeline = 5.80 256 304 336 240 243 246 (cut off)
pclock = 5.80 MHz
hclock = 15.75 kHz
vclock = 60.11 Hz
hsync = 5.52 [us]
vsync = 190.48 [us]
scan = single

I'm not sure how I should be centering and sizing this image.  I seem to be one keypress (i) from the upper bound of the "x" setting, as advcfg beeps at me if I press it more than once.  When I do press it to expand x, I lose the picture.  I can press shft+i until the picture is very narrow.  Adjusting my h-center knob on the EZ-20 doesn't seem to have any effect.  (It did under ArcadeOS).

Two other things that look suspicious to me.  One is that the diagonal lines do not appear to converge in the center.  They're off quite a bit.  The other is that the vsync looks high to me.  Of course, I don't know what a valid range is, but it looks high compared to the other numbers.

So maybe I just don't know how to center and resize my screen.  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Bump

No one here knows the Front Porch, Back Porch, Active, and Sync values for a Sanyo/Nintendo EZ-20 monitor?

Come on guys, help me out, please!  :)
