Possible to use tube from PC monitor?
« on: November 23, 2005, 06:00:06 pm »
I've been looking into getting a couple of boards from http://www.8liners.com/datatech/monitor.html to use with TV tubes. Is it possible to use a tube from PC monitor? I have stripped an arcade monitor before but never a PC one. I have a 19" Iyyama and a 21" that are redundant now TFT's are cheap and It'd save me going to the second-hand shop for an old TV.

In theory you should be able to switch them around, (cant say I have ever done it or seen it done though)

get the feeling that you still wouldnt get that "Arcade Monitor" look from it though (due to the smaller dot pitch on a computer screen)

bear in mind also that computer screens tend to be far longer than TV / Arcade screens which may cause problems fitting them in a cabinet.

I've had a think about it and it's probably a bad idea! I was looking at my Hantarex (probably too closely) but you can see the rgb in the pixels and the scanlines so using a PC tube would either not work or give that blocky flat look to everything.
It was cool playing a few games on a real arcade monitor after testing on a PC. Those old screens make a complete difference to the emulation.
I'll have to post some info on Kens thread about the 8Liners conversion when I get the kits.
