World of Warcraft *trial CD
« on: November 18, 2005, 12:53:10 pm »
I just got a World of Warcraft trial CD - 14 days free.  Anyone played this game? Should I try it?

Been playing for 9 months now.  It will either not be your cup of tea, or it will consume your life completely and forever.  Are you willing to take that chance?   ;D

Hmmm, I dunno. Many games in the last 20 years have consumed my life completely, but they always have had an ending.  Right now HalfLife2 is consuming it. 20 years ago (hmmm, 23 years ago - has it been that long?) it was UltimaI on the Apple//e

You mean Agamaggan?  For those looking into starting, that's a PVP server.  You can and will be killed by members of the opposite faction, whether or not you want to.  A lot.  You'll need to group with others to keep yourself safe.  Some people enjoy that, and it certainly does give you a more realistic, if occasionally aggravating, feel.

FWIW, I'm on Feathermoon, which yes, is a Roleplay server, but honestly 4/5 folks I run into there don't do much in the way of overt roleplay.  If you do sign in there, look up Dwim (alliance-side, no horde character yet), and I'll be happy to give you a tour.

I have not tried it yet since I was gone over thanksgiving. I'm also afraid of adding another addiction to my life.

From experience... my buddy works at Blizzard and got me in on the Alpha.. to the beta and eventually the release.  Awesome game that will suck your time like you would not belive.  I am going to sell my account on e-bay.  I have a 60 shammy and a 58 warrior + a 45 mage.  I don't even want to think about how much time I put in leveling the characters.

The big time sink at high level is you have to group with lots (think 40 or so) people and spend 3-4 hours at a time to get the real good loot.  Now factor in the time to organize the group and you get a feel for how much time the game takes...

That's the part that ruins MMORPGs for me.  I like to play games for fun rather than to get to the next level.  When I'm sitting there scrounging for a few experience points to level up, that's not fun to me.

yeah but its not like youre sitting there grinding out mobs for no reason. there are so many quests in the game you can level up exclusively through questing, they give great exp

Yeah, I've never felt like I was just grinding for experience to level up.  In fact, often I've found myself levelling up too fast (xp for quests drops off significantly once they're a cetrain level below yours).  The areas are so large, and the available quests are so numerous that you only have to complete about 50% fo them to level up.  Levelling is just something that happens to me every so often while I'm playing.  Of course, my top character is only level 45, so I haven't gotten to "endgame" status where I need the 40-man raids to get improved gear.

Makes sense, so with this 2-week trial, I'll just say:
"I think I'll only smoke crack for 2 weeks".
Im cold and frightened.

See...that's why I refuse to even try it.  Cos I'd "somehow" manage it as well.  As in, I would start skipping assignments at school and so on...
