hi im a complete noob with mamewah but i got it up and running, just using epsxe . i hope someone here could teach me how to use the layout designer or at least how to change the look by using other .jpg in the game selection screen/menu

Have you tried it.

Start it up.
File -> Open your layout
Background -> Image

The best way to learn Layout  Designer is to start it up and just look around.  Maybe I'm biased, but it's brain dead simple.  Just create a backup in case you mess something up, or better yet just open a completely different layout.
