I've only seen one praying mantis in my life, and I had never seen a hummingbird until I traveled to Nebraska and seen a bunch of 'em in the zoo there.

The praying mantis I saw was H-FRICKEN-UGE compared to the hummingbirds. Around 3 times as large.

Man, I had a late-night face-off with a praying mantis once and if you haven't seen one in real-life.... well, I'll just say that these things are pretty itimidating.

They're really like alien creatures. I was amazed at how big it was and it stared at me with its triangular head tilting back and forth as it sized me up. I was on some scaffolding and was really afraid it was going to jump onto my face and that I might, instinctively, lurch backwards and land on my head.

These things are effin' freaky. It doesn't surprise me at all that one of these things might take out a hummingbird.

Yeah, I was leaving work one day, and a praying mantis was sitting on my car door, right next to the keyhole. So I get in the truck through the passenger side, and start off home. I'm going down the interstate, doin about 65 mph, and I look in my side mirror, and the crazy bug is still hanging on! He finally let go when I hit about 75 mph, though.

Those are freaky lil buggers.

You could definitely make a good grade B sci-fi movie about them, they do look like an alien life form. Can't believe one took out a hummingbird, though.

I saw that pic a while back. It surprised me because a friend of mine used to "play" with these things. I had no clue they're appendages could slice something up like that.

That's a small version... there are some that are freakin' huge and could take out a hummingbird with ease.

We had a lot of hummingbirds in NS but no Mantis.

Ouch. Surprised the mantis can still hang on to the branch even with the weight of the bird.
Probably no biggie since insects are alot stronger for its size than we are.

They usually have barbs on their legs for that, so they're not using strength, they're simply hooed into the tree.
