Freecycle is Good...
« on: November 15, 2005, 01:08:12 pm »
Thanks to Chad's thread on FreeClycle, I've been monitoring Freecycle here in Ottawa and I WON!!! (not really, although it is somewhat like e-bay in that you gotta snipe these things. Rather than at the last minute like ebay, ya gotta be responding as soon as something is posted)

The guy was giving away an Electronic Organ from the 70's. Works perfectly, just doesn't have the room for it and he's not sure what type it is. He says:

Quote
> Hmm, I am not near the unit to give you details but
> it said something like
> "symphonic melody" on the front.

Heh, nice... you don't always have to be first, though... often, people will wait for the person who can pick up soonest or wait 24 hours than pick someone from the pool.

I've been watching, but it's all junk in my area so far. Boxes of magazines, old clothes, flowerpots. Nothing even remotely cool yet. Still waiting.

To get the most specific stuff, you often have to ask... that's how I pulled a pin and all that electronics repair stuff I still have to go through...

Well, the rules on the local freecycle list state that offer threads are the only ones allowed, you aren't supposed to post requests. Some people still do, but I'd rather play by the rules.

Really?  That's not official Freecycle rules... there are variations, but I've yet to see one that actually says no WANTEDs... odd.

I watch but think my email is lagging.  Suckers are quick around here, I have made an attempt at multiple items but never get in.  Someone has speed email setup methinks.

Mine wants a member's first post to be an offer, no matter how small.

You can IM someone if they have something you'd like though, so I guess technically, I'll never have to make that "first post"

I may grab a handful of salt and pepper packets from McDonald's though, and post my newfound offer ;D

Craigslist's free section is good for crap, or else I get guys from IL posting about stuff that someone more local has posted for a better price.

Yeah, I had me and my two brothers....I bought them each a donut and coffee. I forgot to add that to the price $20 $26.75...

I showed up and am like WTF ??? That things not heavy...

BTW: My brothers and I were joking what if this guy was like the guy who ties up the "Gimp" in Pulp Fiction. You know, the guy with the leather mask they pull out of the tickle trunk. We were laughing pretty hard...

I'm pretty happy with freecycle in my area.  Every day there are lots of kids clothes and baby stuff, which is good for us.  I even got a dishwasher and some closet doors.

OK, I didn't really need the closet doors, but they were free!

I missed a complete Tron cab some months ago by maybe an hour. I happened to bump into the receiver (via Freecycle) and he said the boards might've been acid trashed and then didn't hear anything more.

Whoever runs my town's Freecycle is a jerk.

I posted asking if anyone had any arcade machines, pinball, or jukeboxes. That I was looking for them for personal restoration projects.

I go back today and I get the following:

You have been banned from this group by the group moderator (Yahoo! ID banned: ginsuvictim). You may not join the group duncanfreecycle.

If there wasn't one then, there might be one now.  :dunno

Probably dawned on him/her that he could make off like a bandit with some arcade cabs.

I heard there are Freecycle moderators that never allow posts to reach the site before calling the giver and taking the item for themselves. I have a sneaky suspicion the my group is like that. It's such an insane rarity to see anything even half way decent. It's all WANT WANT ME ME crap.

Not that it matters. I have to log in to the group about once a week and it's annoying the hell out of me.

Freecycle here is pretty much worthless junk. The day i saw a person post  a want for a Corvette was the same day I just started deleting the emails without reading them.

Yeah, when the best free item I saw was someone giving away an opened box of cereal, I should've just walked away.

(That's for real, not just a joke.)

The lists around here are pretty good.  You get the occasional idiot who joins and then posts wanteds for a bunch of pricey stuff but for the most part here the local lists are decent stuff that is real.  Lately it seems lots of kids' stuff like clothes and kid furniture gets passed around.  These are the things offered on my list today:

offer: girls 12 slim old navy jeans
Offer: used light blue formica counter top
Offer: used kitchen sink and faucet
OFFER: Children's videos/DVDs (Norton)
OFFER: Pink boppy Cover (Norton)
OFFER: Pink set of baby Photo Album (Norton)
OFFER: Mobile - lulliby star light on ceiling (Norton)
OFFER: Small bag of bibs (Norton)
OFFER: 3-6 Months Warm Girl PJ's (Norton)

Wanteds today were a 2T snowsuit, a kids' wagon, an issue of People magazine, a Bumbo seat (?), and 2 gamer chairs.

a Bumbo seat (?)

Lets little kids (<1) sit unaided.  Supposed to be good for strength.  Jurys still out.  We have one.  Its convenient.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???
