Medium Resolution Wells?
« on: November 10, 2005, 05:18:20 pm »
I currently have a 27in standard wells, and was wondering what peoples thoughts were about using a medium res monitor instead...What are the advantages/cons. Is the picture better?

Very few games were made that use the medium res format. You be wasting your money/effort.

Thanks Ken for the quick response.... The reason I was thinking about switching is because my monitor blurry and a bit out of focus. I recently just fixed the pincushion problem i was having by putting in a cap kit. Howevery I have a hack job done on the power input on the monitor....could this be what is causing my monitor not to focus clearly?
-Kyle

ps. what size current is suppose to be entering in the power input of the monitor?

In the USA the monitor should be running on 120 volts AC, 60 Hz. A 27" monitor should draw around 120 watts, I believe.

where are the places needed to check the voltages? Thanks for the patience... Oh and could that be the problem or would you think that the flyback has a better chance of causing the problem?

Take your voltmeter probes and stick them carefully in the AC power input connector going into the monitor. Unless your power going into the monitor has somehow dropped below 100 volts AC your focus problem could be either the tube or the flyback.

How much is a new flyback? Also how hard are they to replace? do they just disolder off the board and solder a new one back on?

To replace a flyback is straightforward. Discharge the picture tube, undo the rubber suction cup (anode connection) from the tube. Unsolder the focus voltage (8,000 volts!) wire from the picture tube socket on the neckboard. Unplug the screen voltage (600 volts!) single pin connector from the neckboard. Now remove the monitor main board and flip it over. Unsolder all the pins of the flyback from the foil side of the circuit board.

Flybacks can be quite expensive depending on the make/model of monitor. Some flybacks are around $25 while others can go as high as $150 each.

Hey Ken, have you ever seen a 39" med res Wells Gardner?

7600 series.

A pinball friend of mine says he has one with a dead flyback, and Wells doesn't have a parts list for that model.. (Strange....???)

They carry a deflection board.. Is that the main board with flyback?

Any clue who would carry just the flyback instead of a board at 287 dollars!!!???!!!??

Later,
dabone

I have heard of that model, but never saw one.

According to the Wells site, the chassis had two different flybacks used during the production run:

# 053X0624-001 which crosses to HR Diemen # HR8599

# 053X0677-001 which does not cross
