As much as I love torrents, I find them less than spectacular for music.  You have to download whole albums, which is not a big deal in and of itself, but you also have to contend with the fact that you ONLY find the most popular stuff.

If you like ANY music that could be seen as obscure, you're mostly screwed.  I really miss the days when you could hop on a p2p prog and get any song you wanted.

I used the latest version of limewire a while back. Only gripe with it is that it's written in Java and is therefore slow as all hell. Menus don't respond properly and slows the rest of the system right down.

Considering I'm running a P4 3.0ghz with an overkill graphics card, I doubt it.

They apparently switched to full java only recently so you may have one of the older (better) versions.

Yeah, I want to find older versions of a shareware app that has tons of alternatives and may or may not still contain more spyware than a 1982 Russian satellite.

thanks for the tips guys.  I feel the same way about torrents for music; it's too difficult to find what you're looking for and you can never grab just one song.  I have Shareaza also but it's really a resource hog and always bogs down my connection.

I gave LImeWire a shot and it really worked well.  I'm not crazy about having the Java processes running in the background but the program itself is great.  Thanks for the advice.

It's amazing, back when everyone used Napster, the big complaint was that it was hard to pull whole albums.

Now that you can pull 20 albums at once, people complain that you can't pull just one song.

Because once you put an mp3 file onto your hard drive you can never remove it again.  It's like, permanent, or something.

I used to connect to the alternate "parts" of p2p through winMX.  You used to be able to stay off the main line.  I don't know if it's still set up that way or not.  I haven't downloaded a song in probably 4 years.  Napster was nice because you could grab that waaaay obscure tune.  If I want a full album, I borrow my brothers.  Somehow he ended up with all the cd's when we left college  :'(... but I got the games   :).

Now that you can pull 20 albums at once, people complain that you can't pull just one song.

you're talking about two entirely different situations.

I constantly use torrents to download entire discographies of bands that I enjoy, and it is by far the best way to do so.

However, if I happen to find a single that I like from the next one-hit wonder while driving home from school, why the hell shoudl I waste my disk space and bandwidth for that?  I just want one song.

Two entirely different situations.  And not enough torrents use a proper file structures so that you can download only the songs you want

You would not be wasting bandwidth or disk space.  You can delete the extra stuff when it's finished, reclaiming disk.  Unless you are paying per gig downloaded or something, bandwidth is pretty much a nonissue as well.

If you want the ability to pick one song, go to a pay site.  That's how they do it.

FYI; If you use a BitTorrent client like Azureus you can pick and choose which files inside a torrent you want to download, so you don't need to download the whole album.

Like most of the junk I download, I gets me muzak from usenet (using Newsbin and/or Newsleecher- Newsleechers Super Seach rawks!).

Thats my point.  You can do so, but only if the file structure of the torrent is such that the files are seperate.  If the entire discography of a band is stupidly plunked into one massive .rar file, you can't do anything about it.

It's still a waste of my time if I only want one song.   And for the record, I DO go to pay sites as well, that's not the point of this argument.

I'm also a subscriber to Rhapsody, which I really enjoy, and purchase songs from.
