Rowe Jukebox

I friend of mine has a Rowe Jukebox from the mid-80's.  Everything functions properly, except it sounds lie it has no bass at all and the highs are ear-splitting.  I tried replacing the speakers, that didn't really help.  Any other ideas what it could be and how to test it?

Did you take a look at the needle/cartridge they can get in really bad shape ?

What model is this juke?

It is very rare for the speakers to be bad. You likely need to recap/service the amplifier.

I'm pretty sure is an R-90.  He may have an upgraded amp though.

R-90 was manufactured around 1987 and was available in three configuations: records only, records/CD combo, records/video combo.

You likely have the 6-09931-02 130 Watt amplifier. The tone control slide switches (3 position) are located on the preamp board and accessible thru the amplifier front panel. This amplifier is well known for bad solder joints at the tone control switches, connector header pins, and at the voltage regulators on the preamp board.

The following capacitors go bad on the preamp board due to the heat of the voltage regulators:
C70    10 uf @ 50 volt
C63    100 uf @ 16 volt
C64    100 uf @ 16 volt
C65    100 uf @ 16 volt

Replace them and then see how it sounds.

Where is the best place to pick those caps up?   Radio Shack?

Radio Shaft has a very limited stock/selection of capacitors. If you want to buy these locally I suggest looking in your Yellow Pages under "Electronic Equipment & Supplies" for a parts supplier.

You can buy these capacitors from good old Bob Roberts or one of the many online parts suppliers like Mouser Electronics (www.mouser.com).

BTW, Rowe's have the best sounding jukebox amplifiers out there.
