Request: Mario Bros Control Panel
« on: November 10, 2005, 05:39:07 pm »
I'm building a Mario Bros cabinet for mame and want it to be as authentic as possible.  I am, however making it a six-button layout and therefore need to make a custom control panel layout.  Does anyone have a vectorized mario bros control panel?  I want to sort of copy the Donkey Kong Fighter CPO on www.localarcade.com, but for Mario Bros.

I just need the original CPO to start with.  Thanks...

I uploaded a high-res (but beat up) Mario Bros CPO that I photographed.

It will have to be traced.

LUCKILY, the nintendo logo, and the instructions are already done... the rest of the stuff should be easy. A breaze for somebody that knows how to trace. I know it doesn't help you yet, but it will get you a little closer.

Anyway, even though the file is beat up, you shouldn't need the missing information to finish the trace. The relevant imagery is there. Colors are another thing. I don't have the CP itself anymore, so I can't personally guarantee color accuracy... this image was never corrected.

One last thing. I shot this in raw, though I posted information from the Camera's JPG. If anyone wants it, I can give them the raw file so they can get the max camera res that was captured. If I get around to it, I'll open it and bring up the resolution as high as I can. In the meantime, this file's resolution is Ok.

shoot man, I'm so busy... I just haven't been able to get it all taken care of. There's something cool zorg sent me a link to a long time ago, and I just can't get to it.

For instance, last week I got 6 hours of sleep.

That's busy. The only breaks I get are to post here now and then.

Anyway, I have some really phenomenal stuff piling up. I'd be a little more in a hurry if the stuff we had available was already traced. Since it's not, I can tell it's not a priority :D hint, hint everybody.

I'm one to talk.

I'm trying to get this ebay seller to send me a high quality picture of their control panel, it's brand new!

This may be of interest to you artsy types:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=45805.msg437604#msg437604

I think he mentions that it is not perfect for some reason (stretching or the sort), but it looks good to me.
It doesn't matter if you win or lose....it's how you play the videogame.

Rohan,
Thanks, that's actually a thread I started, and yes, it's exactly what I needed.  Consider the request closed.  I'll upload my finished product when I finish.  Thanks for the heads up though.

Wilef,
Do you have the art file that you created for your Mario Bros. restore project? I just got myself a generic VS. Nintendo cab that I want to turn into a Mario Bros inspired MAME box. If you could email it to me or upload it somewhere, I would be eternally (well, at least 2 months) grateful.

Thanks,
John

This dude made this. He may have the file still - you could finish making it authentic.

His name is Bleemus - I believe he made a project announcement.

Wilef was kind enough to send me the files via email. As an added bonus he uploaded his vector to the Arcade Art Library for all to enjoy. It is similar to Bleemus's CP, but I like Wilef's just a tad better.  ;D

If I remember right, Bleemus looked at that copy before he decided to make his own. The problem with the Wilefs was the bricks. They were a bit clunky. On an actual game the bricks are nice and square, but the scanned image shows them as different size black lines which represent the mortar between the bricks.

One other thing you will notice is the relocation of the start buttons. With both buttons being on player 1's side - things could get a little too close for comfort in a 2 player game.

I liked having the start buttons on the same side because that's how the original was done, also I have kept the Nintendo logo and the 'controller' tags intact.  Also, the fly never appeared on the original CP, so i didn't add it.  I'll admit though that the bricks on bleemus's CPO may very well look better.  Both of us had to recreate them since there was an instruction card there before.  The bricks in the original were never perfect to begin with though.  If you look at the areas I didn't touch, they are 'clunky' too, probably on purpose.  Either way, good luck with the project!

I'm really making more of an homage to the Mario Bros arcade cabinet rather than a recreation. So the exact look of the bricks doesn't really phase me. Nor does the location of some of the buttons which I will eventually move. I will be sure to post my CPO in my project thread once I finally get started on this project some time late next month.

I just thought it was really cool of wilef to send me the files, and so quickly. He didn't have to, but just about everyone I've met in this hobby is like that. Just great people here and I'm very appreciative of that.

Cool - good luck. I hope I didn't come off like I was saying his wasn't any good.

not at all leapinlew, they're just different CPO's, that's all.

John, don't worry about it.  I have also found that people here are really helpful.  I had lots of advice given to me when building my cabinet, so I'm glad to return the favor.

i acquired a donkey kong machine and i was thinking of doing something similar as wilef (love the machines wilef). there is a donkey kong fighter cp on the art library.  I was thinking if somebody with the right know how and equipment can modify it for me without the trackball hole and to the measurement of the original donkey kong cp.

thanks in advance
