Giving up smoking. Another thread.....
« on: November 09, 2005, 09:20:47 pm »
I have decided to give up smoking tomorrow, or on Saturday, or on Sunday.

I need to break the smoking habit plus the associated habits that encourage it.

Been thinking a lot about it lately. My mind is starting to run wild when I imagine the pain it would cause my kids if/when smoking puts me in an early grave. I would be a real cock sucker to unnecessarily put them through this pain and the disadvantage of growing up without a Dad.

I have now been smoking for 20 years and I can only imagine the damage it has already done. I currently smoke over a pack a day.

Giving up something you enjoy is a difficult challenge and I suppose this is a concept the non-smoker will struggle with to understand.

Going to try and do it without the aid of patches or gum. Will also give up the pot (which is such a rare occurrence these days that this will be piss easy)- but again, a simple mind altering pleasure I enjoy under the right circumstances.

I think I will still however allow myself to have the occasional hash cookie for those moments I want that little extra creativity at my fingertips....

good luck buddy, i am also a quitter and proud. get past 14 days and you'll be on your way to healing...after 7 or 8 you think you're in the clear, then 10th day urges kick in again....much better after the 2 week mark

i smoked a little over a pack a day drank enough and smoked weed everyday, breaking one breaks the trinity...beleive it, i really only drink on weekends now, smoke the ganja sometimes even less frequently, and of course feel much much better....do yourself the favor, cause you only live once.

you can do it, remember I quit a few months ago  and I feel much better. There are still certain times when I do wish I I could have a smoke (especially after work), but then I'd have to start back at day one and I'm really proud of my achievement to give up the ciggs.

I gave up pot 10 years ago when I first got married at my wife's request I thought it to be easy but I still had cigarettes as a vice. I can imagine how hard it will be for you to quit both at the same time, but if your serious and strong you can succeed at it.

one little suggestion is to stay away from alcohol and coffee or at least cut down your intake.

I didn't drink any alcohol for 2 or 3 weeks during my initial quitting. At first I didn't cut down on my coffee and that really made it hard on me until I realized I needed to cut down on the caffeine.

good luck to you, I know you can do it.

keep us updated on your progress.

Hey Bones, very cool! I saw this thread and I assumed it was a joke. Best of luck, but if I can do it, surely a hearty Australian studcake like yourself can do it with no problems. ;)

I quit, I'm not even sure, around 14 years ago. I found that after about a month you hardly want them at all anymore.

Hey Bones. Outstanding! After three days of no smoking, the Nicotine is completely out of your system. The only thing left is the Phychological mind games. This can be handled mind over matter. I've been quit for 6 weeks now and its defintaley gotten a whole lot easier.

At first, being a procratinator really helps too (I'll have one in 5 minutes all day).

I would recommend you focus on just quitting smoking and don't worry about anything else. Drink LOTS of water or fruit juices and when the craving get bad, breathe deeply.

After a month, you'll be able to handle drinking booze again in moderation...

I have done it before. Last year I gave up for over 2 months but returned after one big night on the grog.

Alcohol will be my real test.

I figure if I have a beer in one hand and don't have a cigarette in the other, I may loose balance and fall off my bar stool. I really don't want to fall on my face because I am just way to pretty to get scratched up.

Broken... for every pack you buy daily... once your not buying anymore, put it into a bank account. Have it drawn out of your account automatically into a savings account.

So that way you will even have more money to spend on Arcades and Pinballs  ;D

Been a quitter for 15 days now myself.  I have to agree with the comments about 10 days, etc.  Get through the first day.  Then focus on getting through the second and so one.  Once past 3 days, focus on getting through the first week.  Day 8 was a mother f'er for me.  I have no idea why, but I jonesed all day long.

Today, day 15.  No craving.

This e-book has helped me tremendously:  http://whyquit.com/joel/ntap.pdf

And I can't believe you guys couldn't get that joke!  That's like remedial stuff here!  All you guys should have to strap your helmets back on because you could bang your head on something sharp.  It already sounds like there's been some damage done ;)

Broken... for every pack you buy daily... once your not buying anymore, put it into a bank account. Have it drawn out of your account automatically into a savings account.

I have never figured out that concept. I never put cigarettes into my budget I just used my misc. money to buy a pack or carton when I ran out. now that I don't smoke I don't ever have any other extra misc. money I end up buying gum, snack,s drinks, or some other small item that adds up.

I guess if you budgeted your tobacco habit before you quit then it would work, but for me since it was only my misc. money that bought them it doesn't work.

hey Bones.  I've never smoked myself, so I have no idea what you're about to go through.  I've never understood the appeal of the habit, but I do understand that for some reason it's very hard to quit.  I can't stand being in smokey places and wish everyone would quit.

I wish you the absolute best of luck in your decision.  Seriously.  :)
