Configure new buttons for coins
« on: November 01, 2005, 11:31:42 am »
I just installed a coin door and would like to set up MAME to recognize not only the coin door but a combination of buttons as coins in. I want to be able to have my kids enter tokens (which they have to earn) and I will still have a secret way to enter coins when I play (for instance pressing both button 4 and 6 on player 1). How do I do this so that it will recognize it in every game?

I do the exact same thing at my house.  To accomplish this, I configured my IPAC to send a '5' (Player 1 coin in) if I hold down player one start and press another button.  Similarly, if I hit player 2 start and that other button, it triggers a (Player 2 coin in).

Do you have an IPAC?

Yes, I have an IPAC4. So you just go into Notes and program a combo to equal 5? Brilliant! This won't mess up the programming of the original buttons?

Well, I have the original ipac 2 (bought it late 99).  Attached is the screenshot

I'd do it a totally different way, if it's only for mame.  Instead of changing the CP's output, I'd just remap mame.

You can map an input to be, for example, key_5 or (key_up & key_z) or joy1_button8 or mouse_button3.  MameFAQ H05 talks about doing this.  Be sure to remap "Input (general)" to work on every game.  To start over for an input, move up or down one input and return to the one you want to change.  (Or use the ctrlr file.)

If you want to get really clever, I helped a buddy build a cabinet and we put in coin mechs.  We mounted a toggle switch inside the locked coin door.  One way allowed the coin in buttons to work, the other way allowed the coin mech to work.
