Halloween officially a success!
« on: October 31, 2005, 08:54:30 pm »
For the past couple years I've dabbled with the idea of dragging the arcade machines out to the porch, sticking them on free play, and handing out candy.  This year I actually decided to do it.

Borrowed a hand truck from work to make moving the games easier.  Put a jack-o-lantern on top of one, and a Halloween mix CD in the box.

Of all who stopped by, one kid made the whole thing worthwhile: "Dude!  In all the years I've been trick-or-treating, this house is, by far, the best I've ever been to."

Word.   :D

That's awesome. I've been planning to do that the last 2 Halloweens. Was even *going* to do it this year, until we started the basement project and all my machines got buried deep in the garage. Next year though . . . !

Word.  :)
Nice job, but I could name 20 kids that would trash my machine if I put it out there.

I had planned on doint this, but we received 2 1/2" of rain yesterday, so the games stayed in the dry.

Maybe next year.

Make it a house of horrors. Only use games that have been shamelessly converted. (on second thought, I doubt the kids would get it).

There are certainly enough games out there with a "horror" theme to put out...

Yeah, I could use the centepede cabinet I have that was converted to a Street Fighter by someone. I am converting it back of course.

It was pretty funny seeing the reaction on people's faces when the door opened. A few kids my son's age (13) came by and when he answered the door they looked around in awe then one asked Dude, do you really live here?

I would do it, but people don't enjoy broken cabs and pins as much as I do.

Ghosts and Goblins on one cab, Galaga on the other (since it's about the only thing worth playing on it).

I did this for a 4th of July block party, and the local kids didn't seem to know how to play Tron or Centipede.  Even after I showed them what to do, they didn't seem very interested :'(....A little later, after the booze started flowing and the kids were asleep, the local 30 and up crowd actually really enjoyed playing the games.  Women are compelled to play Centipede for some reason, very strange but cool.
It doesn't matter if you win or lose....it's how you play the videogame.

I had this one kid playing Ghosts and Goblins, and he just couldn't get it.  Just couldn't grasp the concept.

Poor guy, that's an extreme-fun game once you get to own at it.

I had one of my son's friends playing WWF Superstars once... kid plays for like 3 minutes, then says "it's no fun if you can't blow up police helicopters".

The kid was FIVE.

There is one house near mine that we all call the drunk house.  There are like 8-9 people in it and every year they are hammered during trick or treating... the chick who was handing out candy spilled her wine on the kid next to my son last year.

Similar experience.  A friend was handing out candy to the kids, and shots of Goldshlager to the parents.  Tasted like drinking those cinnamon hearts.  Did keep me warm for the next half hour, tho.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

My brother mainly got tooth brushes, reflective stickers or, and luckily, an occasional popcorn ball.

Curious, why? You are not charging for it. Both parties are doing so of there own free will. Maybe I missed something.

I have no idea what the law around here is that would cover that, but I'm certain that even if it were illegal, the cops would look the other way, unless any booze got in the hands of a kid.
