Small monitors again
« on: October 30, 2005, 11:09:00 am »
Hi All,

Last weekend in my drunken stupor, I had for some reason decided to try and build myself a pair of mini-cabs. The only problem is I can't seem to find the correct sized monitor.

Basically, I'm looking for an arcade monitor (prefferably new) between 8-10 inches (I've looked at the 5" test monitors but that's way too small now that I think about it)

I've been scouring the internet for the last 2 hours and came up with this:
http://www.dynamicdisplay.com/qes2010-119_color_crt_display.html

The specs say the monitor will accept 15khz CGA signals. I'm not too sure if this thing would work with an arcadeVGA though. Hopefully someone may be able to clear this up (Ken? Where for art thou Ken?). They have a spec sheet on the page as well.

Or if anyone knows any other manufacturers who make monitors in these sizes, links would be gratly appreciated.

Thanks
7

Edit: I just realised, the above monitor will probably cost a small fortune, but I'll see anyway.

Looks like it would work. Apparently for CGA and EGA applications you feed the signal into it via a DB9 connector on the back of it and flip a dip switch to select CGA/EGA signal.

Don't forget the Kristel Corporation (www.kristel.com) and Omnivision (www.omnivisionusa.com) also manufacture commercial monitors. Arachnid used both of these company's monitors in the English Mark Darts games.

Thanks heaps Ken. Looks like the Kristel monitor would suit me better since it comes bare.

Thanks again and I hope no one eggs your house this year.  ;)

Kristel monitors have also been used in video slot machines and video poker games. There is some technical service information on the Kristel monitors available on Randy Fromm's website in his slot machine/gaming section.

Thanks again Ken. There's quite a bit to look through so I'll leave it for another day (gotta sleep sometime this week  ::) ). Hopefully the Kristel monitors aren't too expensive though.

Hey, I've used an old Magnavox monitor to bench test PCBs in the past.  In its previous life it was used as the front end of my Amiga 500.  I think it has a 13" screen.  Maybe you could use one like that?

I've toyed around with using my monitor in a bar-top system.....

I already looked into 13" tubes but too big for my needs. Ideally i'd like an 8" but 10 is just small enough.

Thanks anyways

OK. Getting a bit mad here.

I contacted Kristel and Dynamic Displays over 2 weeks ago now asking for some info on their monitors and got no response.

Are they always this friendly?

I've found that with many manufacturers it's always best to telephone them and talk to a live person. Sometimes emails get bounced or trapped in spam filters.

Try telephoning.

192 pound sterling each. Like I said, it's a bit pricey but it's not easy to find these things.
