Killer Instinct CPO to vectorize.
« on: October 28, 2005, 01:23:39 pm »
I have NOS Killer Instinct CPO, for a cabinet restore I want to do.  If someone is interested, I could snap a couple of hi-res shots of it.
I would love to vectorize it myself, but I absolutely no idea how to go about it...
Anyway, please let me know if you're interested.  I will be putting it on the CP soon...

If you can use a flatbed scanner and scan at 300-600dpi is possible.

Camera photos just dont grab the detail required to do an accurate job.

Then once scanned upload it to the Library and I'm sure someone will vectorise it if they have time.

Hmmm, my flatbed scanner isn't nearly big enough to do this, I doubt I would be able to even do this in sections...if I did a 5MP picture, do you think it would get enough of the detail?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not possible to vectorize that CPO.  All of those tiny gradiants and lighting effects will not translate over without some major artistic interpretation (banded gradiants, etc.).  You'll never get a vector version that, when printed, will match a raster version.

I want my own arcade controls!

you're rigth. this is one of the arcade art parts that could not be accuratly traced but just aproximated

but it seem's that everybody want's vector of everything.  ??? ???
it seem's that vector means some magic ;)

Thats too much detail for vectorizing. I would just scan the pic and add some filter in photoshop instead !

Well, I dunno about anyone else, but I personally don't know much about graphic design or the different kinds of image formats that exist...if you look at the forums, people keep saying that vectoried images are the way to go and that any other way shouldn't even be considered.

yes vector image are in some case the way to go

The number one reason to use vector graphics is that they can be enlarged or shrunk
to any size without losing any quality. For example, the same vector image may be used for your control panel and you canscale it up for the sideart and it will look identical to the original one without any quality loss. And vice versa.
No pixelation occurs with vector files since you are not dealing with pixels.

but there is some limitation in the vectorisation process, you can't accuratly produce vector graphics of an art with many gradients and lighting effects.
you can accuratly matche simple graphics, but not photorealistic graphics.

I now understand, that it would be a waste of time for me to snap a few pictures or to try scanning this thing, so I can now just go ahead and use it...saves me time, and I'll be able to get my project finished faster...

it will not be a loss of time to can the CPO, and share it with the comunity, I'm sure someone will take it and clean it.
