Emulator for Wing Commander?
« on: October 27, 2005, 09:43:17 pm »
Does anyone know of an emulator that can run the older Wing Commander games on a Pentium PC?  Is there anything that can emulate a DOS environment on a 486?

What OS are you running?
If you have a 486 why not just use dos.

If you are using NT or XP check out dosbox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/)

Good luck

Wing Commander compatability status for DosBox:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/comp_list.php?letter=W

DosBox is the ultimate solution for anyone wating to play retro PC titles in all their original glory.  Plus they are working on GUS emulation, which means super hardware sound-device audio without the need to have a $500 sound card.  For that reason alone I'm planning on downloading it and pulling out every single one of my old DOS games to hear what they were DESIGNED to sound like, rather than what they did sound like through my bloody awful SB16 midi synth.

I always loved the midi sounds.  I used to play Lemmings just to hear the music...

Kewl deal... I'd been wondering if I'd ever get to play my copy of Star Wars: X-Wing again....

Eww.  Midi is teh yuck.

I later upgraded to a Creative AWE64!  32 channels of hardware-driven wavetable (with another 32 in software, giving the "54" number).  I went back and played every game I ever owned when I got that card.  In fact, it still sits somewhere in my spare-parts bin.

Anyways... give the GUS emulation a go if both the game and dosbox support it.  You'll never go back to midi-synth after you hear what GUS can do.  Trust me on that. :)
