GameLauncher - choice on which way to rotate?
« on: January 20, 2003, 12:23:29 pm »
Sorry if this is a dumb question, stayed up all night to finish wiring my cocktail cab.  Trying out Game Launcher and it seems great, except I only see an option to select either "horizontal" or "vertical".  Well, when I put it to Vertical it works, it's just facing the opposite way I need it to.  Can this be configured to face the other direction?  I know AdvanceMenu can do this, but I was looking forward to using GameLauncher.

Any help is appreciated.....Thanks.

I didn't see it in the configs either =(

may I suggest joining the glaunch mailing list?

https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/glaunch-public

Dave's pretty good with responses to that (hopefully the response isn't, sorry that's not coded for yet, though =) )

They're might be a trick up his sleeve though...

you can also browse the archives via http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/8097/2002/ although there isn't any search functionality... I skimmed a little bit and didnt see anyone ask anything about rotation.

good luck!

Thanks Rampy.....I was joining as you replied... ;)

As you said, there is no search function, so I have been combing the posts.  Did notice a topic by DD that he's considering going the shareware route for GL.  I really hope there is someway I can rotate the GL display 90, 180, or 270 degrees (so it faces the way I need it to)  I don't really want to use AdvanceMenu...Game Launcer seems so much more "cleaner" or "simpler".....

Thanks for the response!

I would have used Game Launcher in my vertical cab as I really like the look of the interface.   I had already mounted my monitor and found that you could not choose how to rotate the display.  It apparently only goes one way and of course it was the wrong way for me.

In the features to be added on the website the change to the rotation was a going to be done but I have never seen an update to GL since that point in time.  The author is a user of this board and maybe could be convinced to add this.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Ok...did some more searching and found this:

Sorry Mark, but your stuck in both cases right now.  GL only rotates
one direction right now.  I know this was very short sighted, but it
will be fixed in the next version.  Also, you can fix the rotation of
screen shots if you save them while playing MAME rotated.  I will
probably create an option to rotate screen shots in the next version,
too, because this gets requested all of the time.

The good news is I'm actually developing GL again. :)  This means a
release will be coming out hopefully within a month.

So, no rotation right now, and looks like the next version is stalled.... :(

Couldn't you just swap the vertical yoke wires on your monitor if the monitor is installed upside down?

Oscar-

I'm using a regular 15" PC monitor in my cab.  What I will probably end up doing is removing the monitor and re-mounting it.  The only reason I didn't want to do this was because I chose to mount the monitor by suspending it with piano wire from the table top.  I used adjustable hooks to snug it up to the monitor hole, so basically you lift the top and the monitor comes with it.... in retrospect I don't think this was the best way to do it, oh well.

Thanks for the suggestion tho...

Yup, y'all figured it out already.  The current GL only rotates one direction.  And as far as an update coming soon... I wouldn't hold my breath.  I haven't had the time to touch GL for the last 4 months or so.  Real sorry about that, but that's how it goes sometimes.  The next version will support rotating either direction, and even 180, but like I said, I wouldn't hold my breath for this release within the next few months.

Dave I wouldn't worry about it.  I don't mean to insult the starters of this thread but 5 seconds of testing before you installed your monitor and you would have discovered this problem.

Remember planning and testing is everything.

Have to admit... Howards right.

Mame can flip all around... so why not flip the monitor?  Or do you have a 3rd side?

I'm planning a 4 sided cocktail now... I'm also planning on updating my frontend so that you can hit a button on each side and it will rotate to their side.... Then also have a launch on each side that will setup mame to rotate to that side.  But I don't think I will build the cabinet until spring... And the frontend will be updated after that...

Well - I did start this thread with "sorry if this is a dumb question".. ;)

I did my testing using only mame in DOS rotating the screen the way I needed it.  As far as Game Launcher is concerned I suppose I should have loaded it and tried it out on my setup, but per the GL website, I made some assumptions:

Features
Very flexible. It should run with any command line emulator.
Simple and easy to use interface.
Plays music in the background (MP3s or an audio CD).
Displays screenshots (PNG, PCX, BMP, and JPEG).
Customizable font.
Customizable screen resolution.
Support for vertical (rotated) monitors.
Slight menu animations.
Support for PC joysticks.

I assumed support for rotated monitors meant rotation in any direction, my fault.  I didn't count on needing to test a feature, but in the end.....you get out what you put in.

I did contact Dave directly to let him know I will be rotating the monitor physically the way it needs to be, and to thank him for all of his work.  My post wasn't meant as a criticism of his work, simply a question regarding a feature.

I'm glad to say that by removing and remounting the monitor I will have a chance to put some tinted plexi in between the monitor and the table top....which I wouldn't have done otherwise. (I have a clear glass top, so I still wanted the tinted monitor effect.)

It wasn't a dumb question.  Neither the GL site, docs, nor FAQ mention this limitation.  What are you supposed to do, read my mind? ;)

I will update the page and docs to hopefully avoid further confusion.  Sadly, you are not the only person to have run into this problem after constructing a cab.

And no criticism was taken.  I appreciate the user feedback.  And it's awesome to have users that are dedicated enough to make hardware modifications to use GL. :)

Glad it wasn't a complete waste of time, then.  Sounds like a cool cab!  I'd like to see pictures when its finished.
