Take a Peek at my MameWAH Skin
« on: October 25, 2005, 04:29:23 pm »
Well after a couple of hours tinkering I have Mamewah working with a skin I designed myself ready for when I build my FIRST mame cab in a few weeks time.

Have a look at it here http://www.prog-tech.co.uk/mamewahskin.jpg and let me know what you think.

I know the games list looks a little wierd, they are just some random roms I threw in the list to test it

I really like the idea.  There needs to be more skins.  You should submit the package of skins if you continue to screenshot archive.  I for one am happy to see contributions to the community!

Hey Hippo... YOU asked... what did you expect... glowing reviews? If you don't want anything but positive feedback... ask for that only. Anyway, you should see some of the amazing stuff posted in the artwork section from time to time... and a lot of those guys are looking for honest feedback. Even when it's REALLY good, there is usually room for improvement. I'm not saying people can't like it... I just feel that it's lacking personality. After all, it's going into an arcade cabinet. Why not go over the top. Instead of using the LAME logo... (which I've ranted about before) Use something that's more personal to you.... either themed with old arcades in mind,  your own personal theme, or themed on a specific game you like, or a system, or other hobby / interest you may have. I'm not really into people just putting Mario and Fighter dudes, and 200 little sprite or box rips all over their front end skin, but I just think a bland picture of lightning with a MAME logo is not as good as you can do.

The important thing is... that you feel strongly that YOU like it. If YOU like it then... that's cool. If you want to know what I think (as your posting says) I think you can do better if you put some thought into it.

Anyway, don't feel bad. I'm a professional designer... I pick apart other designers all day, and they do the same to me... it's a habit. If we're talking about REALLY critiquing... that can get pretty rough. I had to stand in front of a room for 3 hours once while a professor explained how bad a particular project I submitted was. I've gotten better since ;)

That being said... welcome to the board :D and I completely agree with RayB on all counts.

It's a nice, clean, simple layout.  Did you use Eye Candy (or maybe it's the other Alien Skin software) to create your lightning effect?

I think this skin would look nice with a cabinet pained black with red T-molding.

What are you going to name your cabinet?  Be sure and start a thread in Project Announcements so we can follow along with your progress.

That's less of a skin and more of a theme.  Never ceases to amaze me how mamewah users claim a new skin that is obviously the default mamewah layout with a different bg image.  A true skin re-arranges elements, has a custom font, ect.....

With that being said....  I think your sense of color blance and the fact that you actually used some organic imagery rather than random clipart thrown around a set of borders (like 99.9% of the mamewah skins out there) makes it rather nice..... for a mamewah user created that is.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

It was created in photoshop using various effects and a lightning background. Its similar to the default layout, but I feel thats the information I needed. It actually uses a different font too :P

I understand that you must see this sort of stuff all the time and its hard to get excited by a new user who has 'rediscovered the wheel'. I have been on several other forums for many years and have seen this happen before so I guess I should have been ready for the response!

In one respect mahuti its not as good as I can do, Im fairly good with graphic design but it can take me hours to come up with a design Im happy with and all being said Im not truly happy with, but sometimes I've afraid of over tinkering. Its not my full time job so I dont have that much time to offer it (Im an electronic engineer by trade)

I've never been one to take bad critique on the chin initially tbh, but once I've had a think about it then I normally agree with what has been said.

Markrvp, you guessed the colour theme of my cab, when it gets built. Black paint, red controls and maybe a little bit of red t-molding.
