That's pretty scary. Don't you have employee protection laws in the States? Surely you can't sack someone and not give a reason.

In most states, you can be released without cause.
The only protections are for provable abuse or discrimination.

If someone fires you because they "don't need you anymore", it is up to you to prove that they were discriminatory in doing so.
In Oregon and Washington, it is almost impossible to win a case against an employer, unless there is clear cut evidence to the contrary.

If this case were tried in either of those states, it may be winnable--IF they hired someone to replace your exact route.
If they divided up your route amongst the remaining drivers for a time, you wouldn't win--even if they subsequently decided that they "did" need your job, and rehired for the position at a later date.

Either way, you'd probably have a very difficult time finding a lawyer to take the case because they will probably only do so with a guaranteed payment, win or lose.

No joke with that Pepsi ad. I worked as a contractor for Pepsi for a couple of years and Coke   ***WAS*** a four letter word. They were paying me pretty good and I kinda started liking Pepsi (if ya know what I mean).

Actually, I think this is the same in all HEAVILY branded hugely successful product companies in the US.  The competition is THE enemy!

Other side of the coin.

I worked as a temp for Coke when I was in college.  Went into work with a cup of soda from Taco Bell...  Wasn't fired but caught hell for eating there.  Pepsi prodicts were verboten.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

It is enough to fire a person.

Look up At Will Employment.  You can quit for any reason, they can fire you for any reason.  That is the law in most states and it should be the law in most states.

More to the point, a person caught drinking Bud Light should be beaten and then fired.  It doesn't taste, smell, look, or act like a beer.  It is a soft drink.  I couldn't get drunk off a whole case of Bud Light.

Still BS though, he was not at a company function, or on company time. Oh well, sucks to have to work. People with money dictate the rules. Unfortunately, nothing illegal about it. Just keep on supporting the competition is about all you can do in retaliation.

This isn't a matter of company loyalty it's a matter of survival.

If sales drop, a company can't afford to support their employees, so some people will need to be fired.  By that employee buying one Bud, Miller sales dropped by one, so instead of firing a random employee, they fired the guy that caused the drop in sales.

was he buying bud before the sales drop?  if beer flavor is anything like potato chips, does it really matter what you drink?  do they check your fridge to make sure you only have miller products?  if the employees get 25% off, why buy another beer?

Britney Spears was fired by Pepsi for being photographed drinking Coke.  Of course, she was being payed millions of dollars at the time just to tell people that Pepsi is better than Coke so.....She's a ---auto-censored--- moron and Pepsi should have hired someone to go club her kneecaps.

Kid Rock, on the other hand, was on vacation at a resort in Mexico and he actually called Coors (he was their spokesperson) and said, "Hey....they don't have Coors here and I AM going to be drinking beer."  They sent him a Coors truck.

Disclaimer:  The above is not an endorsement of Kid Rock.  I think that his music sucks.  I just think he's a better employee than Britney Spears.

My current employer is the company with the dynamic ribbon device. I occasionally drink the other Cola product if it is delivered with a pizza, but I would never deliberately purchase the oppositions product.

Is is all about loyalty to your employer, that and the fact I get 48 cases of drink per year as part of my salary package.....

If Pepsi thought for one second that she was actually selling product, Spears would not have been fired.  Catching her drinking Coke was just a convenient excuse to terminate a dead weight contract.

Chad, I know how you love to play devil's advocate, but that is still a totally ridiculous thing to say. A contract between an employer and an employee is not the same as a contract between two private individuals. In the case of the former the balance of power is skewed sharply in favour of the employer.

If an employee gets fired the consequences for that individual can be devastating because many people rely on a steady income to pay their mortgage, feed their kids etc. However if an employee resigns the effect on a large employer is negligible unless the employee held a very senior position.

You are making an assumption that said employee actually SWITCHED from Miller to Bud, for the sales drop. If he NEVER drank Miller, than their sales have suffered nothing...

You are making the assumption that people that drink Miller products never die.
