I don't get how you're ripping off your WORKPLACE, though.  The women are paying for the job, and your work is paying you, so ultimately, the women are paying for you to do the overpriced work.

Did you leave something out in your 'splanation that tells of how you're stealing a huge plotter or something?

Jesus...what format did they bring it in?  Any print shop that doesn't support the entire Creative Suite, Macromedia Suite and Qwark, not to mention MS Office and possibly Corel Paintshop, deserves to be out of business.  If I left a font out of a project I brought to a printer and that printer was absurd enough to spend 4 hours searching for the font instead of calling me and saying, "We can't print your job unless you resave it, making sure to attach all the fonts, preferably as a PDF or something else we support" I would tell him to go ---fudgesicle--- himself.

We're not a dinky little copy centre.
We're an internal printing department. Problem is, our company employs about 160,000 people and we service half those people. About the only thing we don't do is offset work. No room for the machines.

The problem with the job wasn't the fact that they gave it to us in pieces, but the fact that they gave it to us in pieces and they're graphics designers.

These people deal with offset printing places every day and they should KNOW you don't give a print shop files in a non-standard format. Indesign is NOT a print industry standard. Maybe in Guam.  :)
PDF, Quark and EPS are standards (Highly portable if you know how to use them). On top of that, all fonts have to embedded or outlined. Period. The reason for that is a printing place cannot possibly have every imaginable font stored just in case the customer needs it. Sure, they'll have the most common ones but that's less than 1% of what's out there. The Adobe Font Folio package (most commonly used in the design industry) is worth $25000 AU alone, and that only contains about 2500 fonts. That only leaves about 10,000,000 to buy.
This particular customer used a font which isn't even available to buy so I had to look for it (Thank you Bearshare).

Corel Paintshop???     Good one. We don't use toys.

And lastly for your info, we support Office (duh), Illustrator, Photoshop PSD formats, all bitmap formats, PDF up to 1.7, Pagemaker, InDesign, Visio, Publisher but not Quark since that's more for offset. (not to mention the many pdf and Word password hackers for when they forget to give us the damn password)

So there  :P

You left out that they work for the same company, which is how this equates to ripping off your workplace.  And I didn't even get that from this post, it was from your reply to shmokes.  You gotta fill us in on all the pertinent details if you want us to be happy for you or rub our hands together and cackle devilishly with you.  Now, we're just bored that we had to do all the detective work just to find out that you're overbilling for your services.  We hear about that every day from Chad and Seph regarding Seph's mom.

They don't really work for us. They're contractors, whereas I'm employed full-time by the company. And what I'm doing (claiming overtime without a prior request from the customer) is a big no-no.

The bigger no-no is all the private work I'm doing in the place.  ;D

You gotta press the "any" key.  Either that one, or "insert", although I seem to recall something bad happening last time Seph hit that button.

Okay, first they gave you a format that you don't support:  InDesign -- which may not be as big as Qwark yet, but it IS an industry standard and is in the process of quickly making Qwark irrelevant.  Then you go on to say that you support InDesign.  I'm confused.

And no exaggerating....the Font Folio a lot closer to $10,000 than $20,000  :)

You noticed that I listed Paintshop and Office separately from the others.  I know that they aren't in the same league, but you didn't indicate that this was an in-house print shop.  If you're gonna serve the public you have to support the mose common files people bring in to you.

Anyway, I stand by what I said, "Any print shop that doesn't support the entire Creative Suite (which includes InDesign), Macromedia Suite, and Qwark..."  They brought you something in InDesign.  That absolutely should not be a problem for any pring shop, in house, or otherwise.  And converting to PDF is a bad solution when you want quality stuff.  Acrobat often messes with colors and quality, and it precludes the printer from making any adjustments needed for the printers, etc.

They should have given you the fonts, of course, but then you should probably have just called them and said, "Hey!  You forgot to give me the fonts."

Shmokes, the fact you don't work in the print industry is quite obvious and I don't mean anything bad by that statement. I don't work in engineering or the software industry and won't pretend to either.

Secondly, the only reason I said I supported InDesign is because I downloaded a trial version just for that job. IT will have ---my bottom--- if they find it.  :police:

Thirdly, the reason InDesign will not be a PRINT (big difference from DESIGN) standard is because it is not an encapsulated format.

Non-encapsulated formats have the option linking to external resources like other image files and fonts. This really messes us up if a customer brings in a file but forgets to bring the vast array of images and fonts they've used in the process. (happens surprisingly often) And it's even worse if the files come from other states within Australia or even New Zeland. The delay in communication is bad especially if they need it urgently.

This is why PDF and EPS is preferable. We work from word files a lot but always convert them to PDF first so we can see what will end up on paper (On more than one occasion others in the print room have wasted heaps of paper and print time because they didn't proof it first). WYSIWYG in other words.

I have no problem with them bringing in foreign file formats but it is up to them to ask if we support the format and not just dump the CD on my desk and say 'Print it by Monday', which is why I had to go in on Saturday to finish it off (sweet overtime).

The design department is the only department which causes these problems. Even the dumbest customers in company ask those basic questions and make sure we can read the file before they give it to us. This is what was most frustrating and they should know better.

As far as getting the software, have you ever tried getting a company like this to buy software. I had to fight tooth and nail just to get what we have at the moment because bureaucrats have no idea we need photoshop. Just how much it costs and most of the time don't care if we need it. This was the first time we ever got a file in inDesign and therefore probably wouldn't be justified in getting it.

Notice I said $25000 -->AU<--. Australia has a bad habit of vicious mark ups on software and hardware, which is why I buy most of my more difficult to obtain stuff from the US. Savings are absolutely amazing even after taxes.  :D :D

In the end the job got done (ahead of time) but my frustration with the design department is perfectly justified. As I stated, they should know better.

Okay....I back off.  You're more right than me.  It's still criminal to not support InDesign.  It's suprerior to QwarkXpress.  And you have to have Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat, anyway.  Buying them separately is bat ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- crazy when you could just buy the entire Creative Suite for less and get all the programs, including InDesign and GoLive and....I forget...it seems like I'm missing one.

If you know Qwark you should really start playing around with InDesign.  The Qwark people got lazy, thinking they were the only game in town and they just aren't keeping up with Adobe now.  I am talking out ---my bottom--- a bit, as I'm not a graphic designer.  My wife is one, though, so I pick up bits of info here and there (and keep her in programs like CS, Qwark, ATM/Font Folio, etc. -- there are benefits to having a computer geek husband).

Okay....I back off.  You're more right than me.  It's still criminal to not support InDesign.  It's suprerior to QwarkXpress.  And you have to have Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat, anyway.  Buying them separately is bat ---Cleveland steamer--- crazy when you could just buy the entire Creative Suite for less and get all the programs, including InDesign and GoLive and....I forget...it seems like I'm missing one.

You're right about Quark, it's a pain to use but it's very powerful for what it does.

As for the CS, i've been trying for the last 2 months to get my boss to buy it but it has to be 'justified'.

The only thing with CS is that they don't let you pick what you install with each program. It's either all or nothing. And they're overstuffing it with features, slowing it down. yeh I know, 'Get a faster PC'. But if you think getting software is bad, try getting a PC upgrade at work.  :)

Edit: I only got 4 hours double-time for this. I think the cab needs new joysticks.

They should have given you the fonts, of course, but then you should probably have just called them and said, "Hey!

This thread stands as a proud monument to the fact that we will argue about anything here.

You're wrong, ass hat.  I'd tell you why, but they put a limit on how long a post can be, and it requires all that and more to tell you why you're SO wrong, and to shorten it would be to diminish the ass-hattery of your position, therefore, it's not worth it to start.

That's one pound for the five minute argument, or five pounds for the half hour session.
