VanTAGE rotated monitor option - is it bad?
« on: October 19, 2005, 04:24:12 pm »
the Vantage information site says to definitely not rotate a monitor that was not made specifically for that purpose.  I assume this means don't mount it rotated for the long term.  Is there anything wrong with doing so?  What's the point of putting that in the information if it's not true?

Please reference that page.  There's no harm in rotating a monitor.  Colors may go funky, but you can correct that problem.  I'm the guy that maintains the site, so I can edit that to reflect that little piece of inaccurate knowledge.

http://www.mameworld.net/pc2jamma/vantage2.html

NOTE:
RUNNING GAMES WITH -rol,-ror or -origrotate RECREATES THE AUTHENTIC
DISPLAY OF THE ORGINAL ARCADE GAME.
ALL GAMES WITHIN VAntAGE RAN ON ROTATED MONITORS.

HOWEVER, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU *NEVER* ROTATE A MONITOR
THAT WAS NOT SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THAT PURPOSE.

Arcade monitors were obviously used in the games emulated by Vantage, so they are designed to be rotated with no problem.

I suppose most TV's and PC monitors are not specifically designed to be rotated, but they should be fine too.  A little common sense should work here - as long as you can safely/securely mount the screen all should be fine.

You may have to degauss more than once.

I've hit it probably 15 or 20 times...  Still funky colors.

Get a real degauser, the built in coil can take forever to correct for an orientation change.
(Had one that took about 2 weeks to correct itself.)

Bob Roberts sells one for 40.00

My grandfather-in-law used to repair tv's.  I'd bet that he probably has one.
