Dreamcast Controller Hacking
« on: October 18, 2005, 08:47:08 pm »
Is it that hard to pull off? I can solder alright and I'd really like to have a Dreamcast in cabinet. Is there a page with a tutorial or something?

edit: Should I have posted this in the consoles forum?

not sure what your aiming for but i dont think you modify the dc.  You download the roms, emulator, and boot files from this site and burn to a disc.

there are a few others i'll try and find them from my favorites.  also you can use a dc lightgun with the mame games just to let you know.

Sorry... should have been more descriptive, I meant Dreamcast CONTROLLER Hacking (like getting my arcade controls to work with a DC).

Hacking pads are not that difficult. You also have some other options. If you look in the consoles forum there are a number of threads about this. But here's the readers digest on options.

1) Hack your own pads (only do it with original pads or Madkatz pads). In the console forum there multiple links to tutorials, etc.

2) Buy hacked pads. HarumaN has a thread were he sells them. He does an amazing job and for the price you cant go wrong.

3) Buy the XArcade BYOA Kit which will allow you to play more DC games and with the use of adapters allow you to also interface a PC or any other mainstream console (xbox, gamecube, PS1/PS2).

I have a couple of cabs with DC's in them. One is used for Vertical shmups and uses hacked madkatz pads and the other (horizontal) has the Xarcade kit for DC, MAME, and I' considering wedging in a modded Xbox.

Hope this helps,

Really vertical shumps?  I checked the compability list for some and it doesnt support 1945k iii one of my favs.  Unless you mean actual dreamcast games?

I feel stupid i already have a dc from back when ebgames was having a 15 dollar sale.  Well like 5 weeks ago someone had a garage sale and had one for 15 which really means 5 for me.  If i had known i would be building a few cabs i would have snathced it and used it for soul calibur.

Speaking of which has anyone made a ps2 lightgun cab?

Good luck on your cab.

Yes I was referring to DC games which are direct arcade ports of NAOMI shmups.

IKARUGA, TRIZEAL, PSYVARIAR, SHIKIGAMI NO SHIRO (not NAOMI) are some of my favs

I have another DC question..
I'm probably going to use a VGA box to output my video and I'm hearing certain won't ouput/look like garbage one VGA, is anything on this list one of them?
Guilty Gear X
Marvel vs. SNK
Marvel vs. SNK 2
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Street Fighter 3 Alpha
Crazy Taxi
Crazy Taxi 2
Jet Grind Radio (not even sure if it that would play good on the cabinet, just wanna pick it up for 5 bucks because I remember playing it in the store)

in my opinion all 2d games loook like crap in vga mode especially mvsC2 it looks all jaggedy on the edges of the characters i would do the wire snip technique and make everything get outputed in normal tv mode.

Just FYI the native output for the arcade version of MvsC2 (NAOMI) is VGA and I own the NAOMI version and have a DC in a cab with a VGA monitor. No jaggies seen.
