I purchased mine here...comes out to around $40.00

I think it is worth it.  But you should look into running the games with DAPHNE as I think it plays much better with Daphne then using your dvd player.

Daphne website...

P.S. I just sold a copy on ebay for about $30 with shipping, you could check on ebay but make sure you get the right version.

Yes, it is worth it if you like Dragon's Lair and Space Ace.  However, try not to pay more than $35 (US).  I bought mine through an eBay store for $32, I believe.

And I second the suggestion to set up Daphne.  I played the games on my DVD player and it was barely adequate.  Daphne plays the games perfectly.

  • If an experiment works, something has gone wrong
I picked up my copy at half-price books for $20. I agree with the others that it isnt as good playing it on your dvd player. If you dont have the mpegs for Daphne there is a program that will rip them from the dvd. For me it was nice because there is an option to see a complete game played through and some history behind the games.
Experience is directly proportional to equipment ruined

  • Not quite as hairy...
I guess a follow-up question is:  Is it worth the 40-60 bucks for that one, or can I settle for the Deluxe CD or the xbox dvd which can be bought MUCH cheaper?

I have the Deluxe edition with DL, DL2 and Space Ace on it.  Only DL works with Daphne, and I think you miss out on a few scenes (which may not have been available in the Arcade anyway? not sure...?)  I used the DL2DAPH, and it works real well (these are avi's not the dvd format).  Since I have not seen the Anniversary Ed. it looks Real good to me.  Plus, my machine outputs through s-video to a TV, so I think that would degrade the DVD quality anyway...

Good thing about the DL, is it has DL2 and Space Ace you can play from the cd...bad thing is that Space Ace is missing something (which I can't figure out what it is?) which is needed for Daphne so it won't work in Daphne...and I think Daphne does not yet support DL2...

Not sure aobut the xbox or other cheaper dvd's...they are probably OK, but just missing those same new scenes?  Someone else may know.

I wouldn't buy anything that cant be run in Dalphne.

The software that comes with it really sucks.  Only works with some DVD software and seemed like there was some weird lag.  I haven't tried it for years (DL or SA DVDRom) but I remember it just sucking the big one.

Move it to Daphne and everything worked GREAT.

Of course, if you buy them, and then download the movies that work with Daphne, does that make your concious feel ok?

I would only recommend the Digital Leisure 20th Anniversary DVD-Video version (but then again, I have only ever used the 20th anniversary edition so what do I know ;),) you will get the extra scenes and some other pretty good stuff. Right now DVD2DAPH does not convert Dragon's Lair 2 but it should work soon as Daphne has just added support for Dragon's Lair 2.

Just went to the dvd2daphne website and it is down.  Is there another place to get the program?

Okay, just sent it to your comcast email, it is about 10 megs so I hope your mailbox can handle it. (and I hope you have a fast connection  ;D)

Thats the first time I have seen that website down, maybe, just maybe he is getting it ready for the newer version. (oh well, wishful thinking ;)).

Thanks, I got it.  I will try installing it this weekend.  I've been playing it on my cab via media player.  I use the 4 way to move dirk and just press the return key to use the sword.

Even with the "easy" mode and infinity lives, this game is fricken hard.  The timing is so precise, it is kind of annoying.  You can pick the correct way to go, and still die because you were a split second too late or for some reason your move did not register. (The registering part is the most annoying)

I know it takes getting used to, and I am getting a little better, but it almost seems using the directional keys on the keyboard is a little easier.  I realize that this is sacrilege, but it seems to register better. (No, I'm not using the 8 way joystick.)

So, here is the obvious question, does ripping it to the hard drive help the playability, or is my memory faulty and I just had an easier time in the arcades because I had better reflexes in my youth?  :)  DVD drives are slower than hard drives, so I was just thinking.

Thanks again for sending me the dvd2daph file.

I do not think it is your memory and ripping it to your hard drive will help due to the speed difference.

I have been using Daphne for a while now and everything plays just like I remember, except for Space Ace which is much harder than I remember but I am pretty sure it is just me  ;).

Start converting! you will enjoy the game much better.

Be sure to watch the Starcade episode on the DL DVD.  You will see players playing the actual arcade machine.  Notice that the timing is not as precise as you imagine.  You are allowed to pre-emptively make your moves repeatedly until they register.  This makes the game much easier than when you try to time a single joystick movement to the right moment.

Listen to the audio clues... you'll hear the players making many pre-emptive moves and it sounds like this:  BAAAAP  BAAAAP  BAAAAP blip!

I hope that I described this well enough!

Which DVD2Daph do you have. Release Canadate 3 supported Dragons Lair 2. I have Dragon's Lair and Space Ace working currently. And I REALLY bought the 20th Anniversary to play Dragon's Lair 2.

I have the DVD2Daph 3.0 Release Candidate 1 version and it will not work on my 20th anniversary copy of Dragon's Lair II.

Are you saying that Release Candidate 3 will?

It's my understanding that there is supposed to be a new version of DVD2Daph released soon now that the new Daphne has official support for Dragon's Lair II.

Anybody else know the status of DVD2Daph?

Jim Jim,

Did you ever get Daphne to work?
