MTC9000 nightmare, missing B+, whistle
« on: January 17, 2003, 08:05:47 pm »
Help me, this time I am really lost and don't know what to do to fix my MTC 9000 Hantarex. Sorry if this post is quite long but I would like to tell you the whole story.
Recently, I got a "royal video" cab (very popular in Europe) from an auction but unfortunately the monitor is dead. The first time I switched this on, the big bypass resistor(R105, 330 ohm, 30W) got very hot and became red(glowing). I turned it off immediately. After reading many postings, I replaced the flyback/LOPT  with a new one and changed all caps with "capkit". I got the monitor fired up and I started to configure my PC for mame (with advanceMame). After approx. 2-3 hours of testing/setting AdvanceOS screen config.(newbie with this software), the screen showed a "compressed image" horizontally and very bright vertical line across the screen. I heard "whistle" or cracking sound and about 4 or 5 sec later, it became normal. I switched the monitor off, waited 1 hour, switched it on and about 40 mn later, I got the same problem. So I switched it off.
One day later, when I switched it on again, I got nothing except the glowing R105. I didn't think it's flyback problem again, so I changed the HOT (TR15, BU508A). Got the monitor fired up but the cycle continues, (2 hours OK, "compressed image", crack sound etc) but I decided to continue anyway and waited until the screen became normal. Once I got the normal display, I started to reconfigure my AdvanceMame settings and this time the monitor shut down and I got the "glowing R105". I changed the TR20 (with BU508AF, hard to find TIPL762), got the monitor working but with the same cycle problem. Wihtout other testing I changed (one more time) TR15, TR20, TR22, and IC1. But it became worst since this time I have nothing on screen (oh maybe a slight reddish display with my PC NOT connected to the monitor) and particularly a very noisy whistle sound but R105 is warm and NOT glowing. This time I've checked the B+, and it's very high (B+ = 160 Vdc !!). R110 seems OK, also R81. I have no more correct B+ even with a new TR20. This time I'am really lost, what can I do to fix this monitor.
Thanks for reading my posting and any help would really be appreciated and sorry for my bad english

Check every diode and transistor in the power supply and high voltage section for shorts.  If it reads shorted in circuit, desolder one end and test again.  If it still reads as shorted, replace it.
