Help! Any IBM AS/400 People/Experts Here
« on: October 11, 2005, 11:48:16 am »
I have a new assignment. It has to do with the AS/400. I can easily get around the HP3000, HP-UX, OpenVMS, Sun, Linux, MPE/IX, etc, but am struggling with the AS/400.

Anyone here experienced with AS/400?

Anyone know of good Web resources?

Thanks...

You could probably start here.  It's pretty generic, but has a lot of links to get you started.

If it's running AIX I might be of some help, but I have no experience with that hardware model.  I do have a ton of AIX manuals handy.

AS/400's (aka iSeries, pronounced "eye series") run OS/400 (latest versions known as i5OS).

RS/6000's (aka pSeries, pronounced "pee series") run AIX or linux built for the Power Processor.

While it's true that the very latest hardware (power5 systems) can run AIX on an iSeries and i5OS on a pSeries, I'm sure the question pertains to a AS/400 running OS/400 which is much different (5250 terminal anyone?) than any unix variant.

We've got a number of AS/400's where I work however I'm a unix admin and don't touch any of the 400's.
so I said . . . . . WHATEVER!

You can't make me admit I know this stuff.  I won't do it.

I've written for some AS/400 magazines in the past.

Go here for many excellent mailing lists.  Midrange-L is the non specific one.  RPG400-l, web400-l, etc, are more specialized topics.

Thanks Guys, its actually OS/400. Sorry for not being clear on this point. It is very different from other operating systems in that you use a menu'ing system to navigate the O/S. I am used to Unix command line interfaces (hell, I still use a DOS command prompt and *blush* DOS EDIT to work on the parsers here at work. Old habits die hard). But I bet I can open and edit a file quicker than any windows guys using a mouse  ;)

I found a good tutorial on AS/OS/400.  Been reading through it. SO DIFFERENT!!!

http://www.geocities.com/itpweb1/400/html/

Now I need to figure out how to launch DB2 from this menuing system....Hmmmmm. If anyone knows the answer, sure would save me a lot of digging.

Thanks guys!

Until you run into a guy using a port of VI, in which case he has edited his stuff, gone for lunch, come back and edited more stuff in the time it took you to open and close 3 files.
Not this guy...  :)

There is a GUI interface to OS/400, it's called Operations Navigator. It's shipped on a CD ROM with every system, and it's on a share on the disk as well.
