Opening your Daphne MPEG bits using WinRAR
« on: January 16, 2003, 02:20:20 pm »
I own the original Dragon's Lair I and II laser discs.  I wanted to try out Daphne on my MAME cab.  After a bit of work I now have the 49 DL MPEG rar's.  I used WinRAR to open them today and it said #25 archive met an unexpected end, and #33 is corrupt.  I will try to track down good copies of those two bits.

Aside from that everything else extracted and looked good I think.  Here is my question - I was expecting it all to extract into one file, and that file would basically be a computer version of my laser disc.  I would just click on it and it would maybe run in windows media player and just play the movie.  Instead winrar extracted them into a ton of files, lots of them with 'vob' in the name.  The end folder was 919 megs.

Any idea if this is working as it should be?

Yes that's correct...sort of...

first of all I assume you are in Windows...make sure you have all File extensions showing in Explorer.  All of the Dragon's Lair files are either

*.vob.m2v

or

*.vob.ogg

I am willing to bet you have file extensions hidden so all you see is a bunch of *.vob files.  Anyways, it sounds like you have the correct stuff.  The m2v files are MPEG 2 encoded files (don't be surprised if you can't view them in Windows Media Player though) and the ogg files are Ogg Vorbis files.  They are basically like mp3's except they are better.  Ogg is what Daphne developers just choose to support instead of mp3's, which is cool :)

There are actually 50 .rars not 49 that is why you are getting  the unexpected archive error
DragonsLairMPEG.r00  through DragonsLairMPEG.r47 = 19.07Mb
DragonsLairMPEG.r48 = 78.33 Kb
and also
DragonsLairMPEG.rar = 19.07 Mb

If your a FAN of MAME and have a fast connection you can download the whole set in less than an hour
(**hint-hint**) ;)

I don't know where you get the hour figure.

With the Pay service you must use a download manager
I have had the best succsess with flashget
To download just click the first .rar and when flash get opens copy the url and set up a batch download from 00 to 49 its that simple
No lie I got the mpegs for all the laser games on that site in less than 8 hours on my cable connection, I set it up in the morning before work and it was done when I got home
I'm not sure how long they took but it was definitly done in less than 8 hours
