I always viewed SOR as an evolutionary step over DD. I agree with elvis that in the end, SOR2 remains one of the most playable for the reasons he's outlined. I tells ya, BOR satisfies in that space. To me, it's SOR4.

And I also agree that TMNT and the Simpons were not the best games. They get really boring very quickly. I'd rather play Golden Axe or something similar.

Same here.  I remember seeing a dedicated Simpsons in the arcade I used to go in.  I never once even played on it, didn't appeal one bit.

Final Fight in a jamma cab opposite it was another matter tho :)

River City Ransom is my all time favorite (NES or the remake on the Game Boy Advance).

I also liked Dynamite Cop for the Dreamcast/Arcade...

The arcade version of Renegade...  Without Renegade you wouldn't have Double Dragon.  I used to love Double Dragon, and recently discovered Renegade.  For me, playing Renegade was just like playing Double Dragon, only it was fresh and new, and I had to figure out all the tricks to get through the game.  Fantastic.  Tough game (unlike Double Dragon).  Try it.

Double Dragon was definitely a quarter sucker era game.  Never gets all that hard, making you think you can beat it... if you put in fifty more cents.  An hour later you're still thinking that.

Blah blah, same graphics, same gameplay, a few new moves and additions.  That's about it.  Without Double Dragon you never get Streets of Rage.

Truly spoken like someone who never took the time to play the game and learn the strategies.  You've proven that with the "same gameplay" remark.  They are very, VERY different.

There's one in every crowd, and for every game genre who thinks the same, it seems.

And for the record, there are plenty of scrolling beat 'em ups BEFORE Double Dragon.  It was hardly the start of a genre.

Try Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (Dino) and let me know what you think. Im also a lover of DD, SoR and Final Fight but Cad's and Dino's is the one that does it for me! Its easily the arcade game that swallowed most of my hard earned 20p's!

I enjoy Cad's & Dino's (& all Capcom's scrolling fighters) but not as much as Final Fight.  Alien vs Predator is worth a play too.

The only place I ever played it was when I was on holiday with my parents in cornwall, they had some other decent oldschool (to me) games like Hard Drivin' (the sitdown version), Dungeons and Dragons, Hang On, Operation Wolf, Sunset Riders, Ivan Ironmans to name but a few, happy days!  :)  :'(

I stand by my remarks.  You don't have to agree, but it is not valid to say a differing opinion is wrong.

That's just super.  I'm not saying that your private opinion on which game is better is wrong.  Each to their own, mate.  Play the games you like and stay happy, because that's what it's all about.

What I am saying is that statements like "DD and SoR have the same gameplay" are wrong.  The two play nothing alike.  The only commonality is the fact that they are side-scrolling beat 'em ups.  Again, it's like you telling me Space Invaders and DoDonPachi have "the same gameplay".  Not so.

Back on topic: good call on Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, and AvP.  Two more great games.

Why don't we start a "crap game" section?  Try having a few rounds of "Renegade" and see if you aren't falling asleep. :)

SoR  is more along a Final Fight Clone than a Double Dragon clone.  They just happen to be in the same genre.

No need to fight about it.

There is specific need to fight about it.

I will continue to fight, walk to the right, and fight some more until my opinion on Beat Em Ups is respected.

I was just thinking the same thing. But who's "moves" are better and which of you was first? I'm betting you don't have the combo or team moves that the SOR guys have!  ;D

I'm going to go with Double Dragon 1 and 2, TMNT, and Battletoads.

dd1&2 because I own them :)  I prefer the dd1 controls, but like the dd2 gameplay.
TMNT because the level design was pretty good.  Interactive environments, each level had something different in terms of traps.   Though the NES version had more (interesting) levels than the arcade.
Battletoads is mixes it up too, and with humor.  Plus you gotta love giving foes the big boot, kicking them towards the screen.

I honestly have never played the Arcade version of Battletoads.  I loved the NES game although it felt a little cheap in comparison to the almighty ninja turtles.  ;)

I can't believe nobody's mentioned X-Men: Children of the Atom.  That game rocks.  Double Dragon was great for it's time, so was SOR, why the argument?  They both have the cheapo kick-punch at the same time to throw the elbow-of-death (or was it jump-punch?).  The best part about SOR was the music.  Man that was killer for it's time.

What are the Dungeons And Dragons ones someone mentioned?  I'm not familiar.

X-Men:  Children of the Atom is a fighter like Street Fighter.  You are thinking of the X-Men side scroller which has already been mentioned.

The D&D games are really fun.  They mix RPG elements into standard side scrolling killem up gameplay.

Yeah Double Dragon used the Jump and Punch to perform the elbow.  Alas, DD2 and 3 were never the same again.  3 was horrid.  2 was passable but hated the control scheme.  It was a better overall game minus controls.

I can think of one thing:

The grab by the hair 4 knee to the face throw over your shoulder and off a cliff combo.

I quite enjoyed the SNES "Super Double Dragon".  Not that I played it very often, mind you.  So it might be still in "novelty phase" in my brain.

Overall my favourite non-arcade port of Double Dragon was to the Amiga.  I owned the Master System copy also, but the Amiga had better graphics.

Still, all of them combined don't equal one tenth the play time of SoR in my household.  :P

This thread inspired me to go back and play a couple of these. I found DD to be just like I remembered it. I didn't like it much and definiately prefer SOR. I never played Cadillacs and Dinosaurs before I found it to be pretty damn weird. The one I stumbled on and really enjoyed playing was Bad Dudes which is soooo 80s! then I dropped it all and played an hour of Reactor.  ;)

I love the entire Genre... Each game series has it's charms... But, does anyone find it strange that Double Dragon just became something else? Am I the only one who played the 6th one which is just a fighting game? Not Double Dragon the Movie... The one that playmore came out with about 2 years ago? And please don't bash on the TMNT arcade series, as poor as the collision detection was... Double Dragon as well as Streets of Rage... Only two players.TMNT gave that push towards the four player standard(That up until recently Sony refused to recognize)

I wanna try that Rumble Fish game out. They had it in the arcade around the corner from me for like 2 weeks. but I never got a chance to try it.

Am I the only one who played the 6th one which is just a fighting game?

There have been 3 Double Dragon "fighting" games (ie: 1-on-1 fighting, not brawler/beat-em-up style) that I can recall.

1) Double Dragon 5: The Shadow Falls (SNES - 1994)
http://www.classicgaming.com/doubledragon/rddvsnes.htm

2) Double Dragon (Neo Geo - 1995)
http://www.classicgaming.com/doubledragon/rddneo.htm

3) Rage of the Dragons (Neo Geo - 2002)
http://www.classicgaming.com/doubledragon/rrotd.htm

I'd say my favourite of the 3 was the middle one, as it was a touch more "Street Fighter" ish.  The SNES one was too slow, and RotD was very King of Fighters (which I don't like).

But anyways... none of them are Beat 'em Ups, and thus not on topic.  So I'll shush now. :)

...hmmm I always liked Sunset Riders for some reason, followed by TMNT and Final Fight.

It's funny, I remember very vividly being in my college arcade playing TMNT doing really great....and then my girlfriend found me. I was basically given the choice of finishing my game or taking advantage of her ......I hate to admit I actually hesitated and considered finishing the game (she was pretty hot and 19)....but I was doing so freakin' well in the game!.....

.....just so you all know, I left the game.....

Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?
