Nothing obscure or original, but it is a tie between Golden Axe and Final Fight. They both probably consumed an equal amount of quarters from my pockets.

Those are fighters, not beat em ups.

I'd say it's hard to beat the original Double Dragon.

 :o :o

Dude, Double Dragon defined and propagated the whole beat 'em up genre.

It was a huge arcade hit and was on every platform (except TG16) with about 5 sequels.

Streets of Rage was a Double Dragon clone.

The best version, of course, is the arcade.  The only home version that I have ever spent real time with was the NES version.

I don't know why but for some reason I've always preffered the NES version aka KungFu over the arcade.  The crappier graphics just seem more appealing for this game.

Agreed, I love the horrid sound effects in that game.  *BOING!* WAHH AHH HAA AHH!

I enjoyed Captain Commando in the Arcades (BABY IN A MECHA SUIT!  HiYAH!)

I've never played but have always heard good things about Beats of Rage - a PC freeware that is a sort of update of Streets of Rage.  You may want to check that out.

Shoot...

Forgot about TMNT.

That and The Simpsons got some mega play from me as well.

I still stand by my Final Fight and Golden Axe initial post, but there are definitely a lot of great beat-em-ups on my list of arcade favorites. They were the golden genre when I was hitting my arcade prime. :)

eah, the beat em ups were my re-birth into arcade games.  I was a child of the 80's and fell out of arcades about mid 80's, but the late 80's early 90's games brought me back.

beat em ups and fighters

I LOVED Double Dragon.  That was the game that truly got me into arcades.  It was the only arcade game my dad would actually play with me.  We beat if many times.  I actually have a double dragon 2 in storage thats in a terrible stargate conversion cabinet.

I also spent a lot of time and money on X-Men and both Ninja Turtles games.

I played lots of SOR and DD primarily on consoles (I was a tempest / defender / galaga / shinobi guy in the arcades). I now play lots of Beats of Rage which I think is an absolute gem.

Final Fight's probably my fave...the huge characters and 'Haggar' were great :)

Golden Axe is cool too, played a lot of the Genesis version (good port).  Golden Axe 2 on the Genesis is good too...practically the same but with different levels.

Edit: This is one genre of game which has never really been decently done in 3d.  Shame but I don't think you could top the 2d ones anway.

Streets of Rage was a Double Dragon clone.

If "Streets of Rage" was a "Double Dragon clone" then a Lamborghini Murcielago is a Toyota Camry clone.

Double Dragon didn't have:
1) Team up moves (throw your partner as a projectile)
2) multi-move "specials" (not just one)
3) Trade-life-for-invulnerability specials (Final Fight did, but only 1 special per char)
4) make-your-own combos (try chaining a 2-hit jump kick move in a standing combo in DD!).

Just because two games are of the same genre doesn't make them clones.  Tekken is not a Street Fighter clone.  Daytona is not a Pit Stop clone.   They are the same genre, but light years apart in terms of gameplay.

IMHO, Streets of Rage II was the best beat 'em up of all time.  It had more moves, better characters (user-playabe and enemies) and a wider variety of weapons use than any other game.  SoR came a close second.  The third was just a rehash, and not worth more than 1 or 2 plays for novelty value.  I know plenty of people who scoff at SoR for being console-only, but it's the perfect example of superior gameplay over flashy graphics and bling-factor.

Final Fight and Double Dragon are absolutely without a doubt classics in the genre.  But neither had the depth of gameplay to the SoR family.  They are too simplistic in comparison.  That's fine if you like simple games, but I find them tiring after one play.  Having mastered all the techniques of a game in the first level, there's nothing more to do.  SoR2 gives you mutliple characters all with a HUGE range of moves for a side-scrolling beat'em'up.

TMNT to me was a gimmick.  The hit detection sucked, and gameplay was missing completely.  The only thing that made it fun to play was the TMNT branding.  Likewise for "Simpsons" which was the same game with different sprites.

Just my 2 cents.  My old MegaDrive (Genesis for the US audience) still gets SoR2 play today, over 12 years later (I bought the game only days after official release).  I can't say the same for any other beat'em'up I've ever played.

Well I like Streets of Rage 1/2 as well.  I think the music tops them off (boss music in the first one is great).  But I still probably prefer Final Fight overall.  Then again, I had the Amstrad version's awesome graphics to be in awe of:

Blah blah, same graphics, same gameplay, a few new moves and additions.  That's about it.  Without Double Dragon you never get Streets of Rage.
