Also, know that while cd-r's work, cd-rw's will not.

GD-Roms work too!  :D

Oh and DreamSNES runs a little slow.  Maybe if you overclocked the DreamCast it would work better.  I don't know.

I read somewhere that cd-rws can be made to work if you adjust the laser. I haven't tried it myself though.

My overclocked DC plays games via DreamSNES just fine.

It can be done, but it will cause the laser to burn out about 4 times as fast as normal.

How did you overclock your DC?  Is there a guide for this somewhere?

I was thinking the same thing and found a guide here > http://devcast.dcemulation.com/mods/overclock/overclock.php

I have never overclocked anything though so i dont know whether to try it or not. I have two DCs though so I may give it a go. I need to check which versions I have got as it only seems to work on 0 and 1 models (not 2). I think you also need a 40hz quartz crystal? Im not to sure on this, im sure the mighty DC master Gozur will sort us out  ;)

I actually purchased my Dreamcast overclocked. The guy that I got it from used to provide an overclocking service for the DC. I know him from the SHMUPS forum. Last time I chatted with him; he was looking into getting the stuff to begin overclocking again. The one I have is in a custom case with a switch to toggle betwwen 200Mhz and 243Mhz. I've never found a reason to turn off the overclock and I was assured that the overclock would not fry the CPU. There is a distinct difference in playing SHMUPS with the overclock on vs off.

Also, know that while cd-r's work, cd-rw's will not.

CD-R, DVD-R, CD-RW and DVD-RW all use different types of lasers.  Any PC-based CD/DVD burner actualy has 3-4 different lasers in it, depending on what it supports (hence why they take so bloody long to figure out what gets put in them when you load a new disc up).

The DreamCast laser can read CDROM and GDROM.  AFAIK GDROM is simply a double-density CDROM, hence why CDROM still works fine in DC's without a mod.

Modding a DreamCast to read anything other than CD-R will do damage to it over time.  Not to mention the fact that CDs can be purchased for mere cents these days, why the heck would you bother risking the life of your DreamCast's laser (meaning  you have to fork out for a new laser, or a whole new DreamCast) compared to spending a few bucks on 100 CD-Rs?
