Line Sync problems
« on: September 29, 2005, 07:58:05 pm »
I know there are better places to post this question but as there is a plethora of talent here I thought I might get lucky.

I have had PC problems for about 6 months, that is to say I have had Internet connection problems for about 6 months...

I have ADSL. It's always the same, I click a link and nothing happens, then the TX/RX lights flash a couple of times and then I loose line sync. Thinking it may be a software problem I gave IE the flick months ago and now use Firefox. Norton AV is my choice of protection.

Once the connection re-establishes itself I usually get a few more minutes trouble free before the whole process starts again.

I have scanned thouroughly using just about every recommended piece of software I could get my hands on and feel my PC is clean from nasties.....

Sometimes I have no problems for two or three hours then the next day it goes haywire, the problem appears random. I have my modem hooked into a router but the problem is identical if I use the router or just plug directly into my phone line.

I have a mate who uses the same ISP and he has no problems. My next step is to buy a new modem as my current one is quite old but I really don't want to piss $150 away to discover the problem was not the modem.

I feel my line is in good order although I haven't had it tested. Any other ideas guys?

I'd get the line tested, just in case. It can affect DSL without ever being audible on the phone.

It could be the specific phone jack, too. Have you tried plugging the modem into other jacks?
That was causing me problems here. The line to the jack the DSL modem was using was bad, but everything else in the house was OK.

No I haven't tested other outlets and this would actually be very difficult given the location of my PC but it may well be worth the effort....

i had something similar happen with dial up. I would be online for about 10 minutes and next thing, the WWW comes to a grinding halt and eventually disconnects. Turns out it was a land phone plugged into the same phone outlet. I tried relocating the phone to another room, same prob. Then I plugged the phone into the modem thru-port, and no more problems.

Do you have a line filter installed on your phone line? If not, that could be it or just try unplugging any phones which may be on the same line, not necessarily on the same socket.

Now in a tasty new flavour.

I have two phones sharing the same line and both have inline filters.

The problem started out of the blue. There were no changes made to my system or home line and then one day it all went to crap.  >:(

The LEC should be able to ping the modem from their office and tell if packets are dropping or not - that should be over the phone and not cost you a dime.  If they see the problem on their end, they fix it.  If its on your end, you dig deefer.

Last time it happenned to me, I took a laptop and the modem, moved everything to the test jack outside the house, and fired it up.  When it worked there, I knew the problem was in my house.  Ran a few new cables and it cleared up.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

I've had sync problems three times in the past 7 years ... twice was due to problems between me and the CO (and had a hell of a time trying to convince the phone company that it was their problem). Once was due to the modem (ISP upgraded my service, but neglected to tell me that I needed a new DSL modem).

I still have periodic problems with my home alarm and DSL, but those are very rare and last a minute or two.

Cheers.
