So which are you using and why?
Back in MY day we lived on the moon and we had to build a rocket ship from scratch to get to the Earth before we suffocated.

Not really something you want to be advertising.

"and has anyone downloaded most of the roms?"  Of coarse someone out there has.

With harddrive images last I saw mame could be fit onto 11 single sided dvds.

Now, being a newbie you are going to want to download them all.  It's the typical progression of a new mame  user.  However, you will realize it is futile because
1) you will only like small percentage of what mame supports
2) a very large chunk of mame is unplayable.
3) many games are not in english and can be difficult to figure out what to do, espcially if you have to anwer a question.
4) there are alot of clones and hacks in mame

Also, if you search you will see people have asked this many many many times.
