The Doom/Hexen/Heretic engines were released under the GPL a few years back.  People have since hacked them up to make them completely 3D accellerated as well as add extra lighting, shadow and other effects and features.

Check out the Doomsday engine:
http://www.doomsdayhq.com/

It will run native under Win2K/XP (no DOS emulation required) and use both OpenGL and Direct3D.  Highly recommended for a nostalgia kick with a difference.

Another great site.  I haven't stopped playing all my older games.  The only problem is that it has taken away from finishing my arcade cabinet.  Maybe my fianc

I even tried Wolf 3D on my cab since you don't have to look up or down. It was too frustrating though due to the constant desire to strafe.
