Well after spending way too much time figuring this out, I decided to use the command line version of Mame rather than the DOS version of mame to get the sound to work.
I have read, and read, and read that Mamewah uses the DOS version of Mame, and I guess the command line version is DOS, but you can not get sound unless you can get DOS drivers to work for your soundcard. No need for DOS sound drivers if using the command line version.
Anyway, Mamewah works as it shoulf for me now.
