web hosting and domain names
« on: September 24, 2005, 09:14:32 pm »
ok, my site has been hosted on my friends domain for a year or so now and its been good. i really appreciate it. but lately his site has been playing up, and thus mine too. ive almost dropped off google altogether in the space of a week or so! so i think its time to spread my wings and fly the coop. ive never actually set up a site from scratch before. so does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable, relatively cheap host and also who would you recommend to register a domain name with? also i remember using something called ftp (?) to upload stuff, but one day i reformatted my hard drive and could never make it work again. so since then any updates ive had to waite weeks or months for when my friend had time to do it for me. whats the simplest way for me to upload? it doesnt have to be the most stream-lined as once the page is up i wont be uploading heaps of stuff in one go.
luckily ive managed to save one page of text from the google cache so i can use that as a 'place' on the new web site until i can get all my info off my computer when its finally sent to me...

http://www.godaddy.com  costs $9 a year to register a .com.

I use http://e-rice.net.  Very Cheap, very reliable.  I have 2 sites there and never had a problem.

Standard 1 : $10/yr
100MB - 3GB/mo transfer - 10 Emails - 1 DB
Standard 2 : $20/yr
200MB - 6GB/mo transfer - 20 Emails - 2 DB
Standard 3 : $30/yr
300MB - 9GB/mo transfer - 30 Emails - 3 DB

whats the simplest way for me to upload?
Use a WYSIWYG editor like front page.  You'll have to check with the hosting company to see if they are setup for people to use the program though.  I always used Front Page 98 when I was doing stuff, it was easy to make pages (exactly like Word) and IMO, even 98 can still do more than what most people need.  When you update, you just hit a single button.

I always used Simplenet as a host, but they were bought out by Yahoo many years ago.  I had  several problems with Yahoo.

I like www.jaguarpc.com.  They have the Gigadeal, which gives you 5gb of space, 75gb transfer, and all the trimmings for $7.95/month.

I use 1and1.com to host my site. I signed up a couple of years ago and it was free.

I used godaddy.com to get the domain name. You can get the domain name and hosting at 1and1.com.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and is used to move fioles (i.e., your html pages/graphics) up to the website directory. I use a program called "ws_ftp", but you can also use the built in one in IE. Enter in your URL in your web browser (i.e. ftp.yourdomain.com). Then you can just transfer files like you do using explorer drag and drop.

that sounds so simple. i wonder why my friend didnt use it? although his computer was win98 so maybe it wasnt on it? im on xp so ill give that a go. and i designed the basic setup of my website in frontpage so i would have the code, and then tidied it up in notepad once i could see what was going on. e-rice sounds VERY cheap! but if youve had no probs thatll do me (",) that and go daddy. thanks guys!

I didn't know anyone still did that.  All of my pages written with notepad come out really ugly due to my lack of time / talent for such things.

Woo Hoo!!!! The world will never be the same  :)

I just went to your site and it says coming soon. Let us know when it is up so we can give your stats a boost!

Too bad about 1&1 not being available to you. I signed up 2 years ago and its still free. Actually, I get an invoice if I go over 5GB a month, and my last invoice was for a whopping .49 cents! Gotta love it  ;D

Web Hosting - SirPoonga uses and I looked into this: http://free.hostdepartment.com/, but I don't think you can set your own domain name.

Page Design - I like Nvu much better than FrontPage, which I have also used - http://www.nvu.com/ (plus it's free).  DreamWeaver is great, but it's like $400.

Page Uploading -

FTP Explorer is freeware and does a good job - http://www.ftpx.com/ (oops - use to be freeware for non-commercial use, now looks like shareware after 30 days, but may still function).  I have the freeware version if you want it.

CuteFTP is great but not freeware - http://www.cuteftp.com/products/ftp_clients.asp

Unlimited FTP works though your browser - http://www.unlimitedftp.ca/products/unlimitedftp/ and is one of my favorites, though no longer free.  I have the beta version which was (is) free, however, if you're interested.

Windows includes a ftp client.

Start a command prompt, cd \windows and dir /s ftp.exe. That will tell you where your ftp.exe is. Mine is in windows\system32.

Start another command prompt and cd to where you want to upload from. Then just run ftp from there. If ftp.exe is not found, run path to see if the directory containing ftp.exe is in your path. If it is not, move it somewhere that is.

I use command prompt edit for text and HTML editing.

Main page should always be named index.htm  (or .html)

godaddy.com is a good domain name service

I use webmasters.com for hosting

The pics may have to be renamed to be directly visible - some web servers have a problem with CAPITAL letters in the extension. - or - the ftp directory you see is not always the same as the html directory.

I never really could figure out dreamweaver, I use NetObjectsFusion - simple, but adequate.

No 6. I am out.

The Ten Tenents of Chindogu

Every Chindogu is an almost useless object, but not every almost useless object is a Chindogu. In order to transcend the realms of the merely almost useless, and join the ranks of the really almost useless, certain vital criteria must be met. It is these criteria, a set of ten vital tenets, that define the gentle art and philosophy of Chindogu. Here they are:

1. A Chindogu cannot be for real use

It is fundamental to the spirit of Chindogu that inventions claiming Chindogu status must be, from a practical point of view, (almost) completely useless. If you invent something which turns out to be so handy that you use it all the time, then you have failed to make a Chindogu. Try the Patent Office.

2. A Chindogu must exist

You're not allowed to use a Chindogu, but it must be made. You have to be able to hold it in your hand and think 'I can actually imagine someone using this. Almost.' In order to be useless, it must first be.

3. Inherent in every Chindogu is the spirit of anarchy

Chindogu are man-made objects that have broken free from the chains of usefulness. They represent freedom of thought and action: the freedom to challenge the suffocating historical dominance of conservative utility; the freedom to be (almost) useless.

4. Chindogu are tools for everyday life

Chindogu are a form of nonverbal communication understandable to everyone, everywhere. Specialised or technical inventions, like a threehandled sprocket loosener for drainpipes centred between two under-the-sink cabinet doors (the uselessness of which will only be appreciated by plumbers), do not count.

5. Chindogu are not for sale

Chindogu are not tradable commodities. If you accept money for one you surrender your purity. They must not even be sold as a joke.

6. Humour must not be the sole reason for creating a Chindogu

The creation of Chindogu is fundamentally a problem-solving activity. Humour is simply the by-product of finding an elaborate or unconventional solution to a problem that may not have been that pressing to begin with.

7. Chindogu is not propaganda

Chindogu are innocent. They are made to be used, even though they cannot be used. They should not be created as a perverse or ironic comment on the sorry state of mankind.

8. Chindogu are never taboo

The International Chindogu Society has established certain standards of social decency. Cheap sexual innuendo, humour of a vulgar nature, and sick or cruel jokes that debase the sanctity of living things are not allowed.

9. Chindogu cannot be patented

Chindogu are offerings to the rest of the world - they are not therefore ideas to be copyrighted, patented, collected and owned. As they say in Spain, mi Chindogu es tu Chindogu.

10. Chindogu are without prejudice

Chindogu must never favour one race or religion over another. Young and old, male and female, rich and poor - all should have a free and equal chance to enjoy each and every Chindogu.

Living the delusional lifestyle.

So if I made a stand to put my bacon on so it's visible through the window to the birds eating at the feeder, that would be Chindogu? If so I'm off to the woodshop.

If you hit it at the right time, Globat has some excellent deals. Right now they've got a $24 deal for one year, 15gb storage, 350gb bandwidth per month- but there's probably a set-up charge and domain registration fee on top of that. Still a good deal, even at full price.
