Leaving a Monitor in Cocktail Position?
« on: September 23, 2005, 03:09:52 pm »
In the MAME docs it says not to leave a PC monitor on its side un-attended.  I presume this is in case it bursts into flame or something.

Whats the deal with PC Monitors in Cocktail cabs?

Ive been asked to build one for my local Pub, and have no problem doing it; I just want to know its going to be safe.
It could be on and unattended for quite a while.

Good to know.

Is it a PC monitor?
Did you install it AS IS or remove the plastic casing from it?
What did you do about ventilation?

yes it is a pc monitor. When i first installed it, it was in the case but i didnt like how low it set in the cab you had to like leanover to see the monitor. So i cut the top more and took off the casing and made it flush with the glass. I recommend that for a better picture.

am using a IIyama visionmaster 410 (17") in a home built cocktail cabinet and can say that with no modification to the case it shows no excessive heat after over 8 hours of continuous use. your mileage may vary with other makes / models, I know I wouldn not like to try it with some of the 20" sony monitors as they run a lot hotter in the normal position let alone face up. (also would not like to try mounting them as they weigh about the same as the average 28" tv)

are they going to charge customers to play it? don't think that is allowed in Mame licence plus expect Mr Ultracade will be very interested in speaking with you.

i would get them (the pub owners) to sign a disclaimer...else do you really want the chance of being responsible for burning down your local pub?

I wonder what their insurers would think about non tested/verified safe electrical goods being installed in the pub?

You also need to think about other things...like making the cab electrically safe to prevent the punters getting electric shock from poor grounding of anything metallic. dont really want to kill the customers do you?

there are lot of thing you need to consider when putting a cab in a public place.

All good points.
Im have a fully qualified electrician and a shoppfitter in the house so the build quality and PAT safety is no issue.
As far as the charging bit goes, its going to be free - they're just going to pay me for the parts and labour.  And maybe a few beers...

The disclaimer has already been sorted too, so the only thing thats going to sting me is the fact that the roms are illegal.  But then i dont see many people running round paying for the licenses to use there 1000+ roms so im not really bothered.  The pub is about the size of average living room and i doubt anyone of consiquence even knnows its there...

Nah, they wont be charging for it.
It will play for free with a credit button.
Its purely for the nostalgic amongst us...
