sailing around the world
« on: September 23, 2005, 10:23:49 am »
My roommate is leaving me in a week to sail around the world.

He doesn't have a boat, but he is extremely competant and will crew his way around.

Anyways, he's got a website and you should check it out.  It looks pretty good.

theRoadisLife.com

(the website name comes from a quote from On the Road by Jack Kerouac - it's on the site up at the top)

If you have any feedback on the look of the site or whatever, you can post it here.

Sounds like he's got a good plan.

[missioncontrol singing]

I'm sailing away
Set an open course for the virgin sea
For I've got to be free
Free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board I'm the captain
So climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow
On every shore
And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try
To carry on
I look to the sea
Reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends
And the dreams we had
We lived happily forever
So the story goes
But somehow we missed out
On the pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can to carry on
A gathering of angels appeared above our heads
They sang to us this song of hope and this is what they said
Come sail away
Come sail away
Come sail away with me
I thought that they were angels
But to my surprise
We climbed aboard their starship
And headed for the skies

Sounds like he's got a good plan.

As someone who grew up in Maritime Canada, I will say that it is a good plan.  Most people who try to sail around the world have their own boat, and owning a boat for that period of time only works for people with huge amounts of cash or luck.  Your boat develops problems, storms come up... it's easier and more efficient to take jobs on a cargo boat in exchange for a small wage and transportation.

He's hitchhiking across the ocean.

Your home world is very sarcastic but only slightly witty.

<channeling old SNL skits>

Perhaps he can barter passage by offering the captain and hist mates "comfort" in their cabins after lights out.

If I recall, John Belushi was the captain, and Eric Idle was the cabin boy.

Eww.

Which would be worse??

John Belushi and Eric Idle ... or Chris Elliot?
