Guys,

I have a maxtor onetouch II external usb drive. Its about a month old.

When I plug it in now it doesnt appear in windows 2000. I can see the drive in the 'drive manager' but its telling me its 'unallocated'.

Is it fubar'd or has anybody a handy solution.....

Ta

Sometimes you get a conflict with another drive letter, which may have been assigned previously, or if you had a flash drive in there. Try assigning another drive letter. Right click, select Change drive letter.

If you get a drive letter, try running chkdsk (from cmd prompt) on it.

(Assuming drive is E..):

chkdsk e: /f /x

Also, try another USB port if you have one...

The problem is the drive isn't even APPEARING now in windows. You can see it in the windows 2000 'manage' program but it shows as 'unallocated'

Have you tried it on another PC yet. That's usually the first thing I do when external peripherals start to flake out.

You can do that there. Stingray has a good suggestion - try it on another pc also...

RESULT! My studio PC has partition magic 8 on it and I was able to recover the drive. 5 minutes and a change of underwear later and I was sorted.

Cheers y'all!!
