Lucas is well aware of the value of waiting a few years.  3 years from now it will be another massive media event.  1 year from now it will just be a Star Wars show.

Yeah?  What is this 3-D talk?  How many times is he going to re-release things?

He'll do it until we stop paying him to. I have no intention of cutting off Uncle George though. ;D

As is well documented here, I will see anything in 3D.  I paid to see Shark Boy and Lava Girl.

I tend to wait until it's in the cheaper theaters and go to a matinee.  For 3D, though, I would probably go to whatever theater had the best facilities.  Hopefully IMAX.

3D Star Wars would definitely warrent paying big bucks to see it at the best theater in town.

If it's real 3D like what they have at the MN science museum... then I'd see it.

If it's real 3D like what they have at the MN science museum... then I'd see it.  They had the 3D mars footage there and it was pretty spectacular.  I forget what the technology is called, but it was true 3D, not that red & blue glasses stuff.

Here's a link: http://www.smm.org/mars3d/
Polarizers.

It projects 2 images with polarized light.
One like this: |
And the other like this: -

The cardboard glasses have polarizers that match the projectors, so your eyes only see one image instead of both.

Same concept as red/blue 3D, just more advanced.

There is nothing like IMAX 3D. It comes right off the screen and dances in your lap.  I've seen people duck out of the way of stuff, reach out and grab stuff, it is absolutely amazing.

It was excruciating and the 3D barely worked.  My wife and I took the kids.  Even they didn't like it and they love just being at the movies.

You know, if Lucas remade Star Wars with that technology, they'd have to have 24-hour showings.  He'd make billions.

Yeah, it is hard to describe how much better their polarized glasses are than the traditional color anaglyphs that most movies use.

Cooter... the key word there is REMADE.  I believe a film has to be shot with that in mind, though I could be wrong.

I've got some 3D shutter glasses for my PC which operate on a similar principle. Basically you double the monitor's frame rate then the LED shutters switch on and off in turn so that one eye sees even frames and the other eye sees odd frames.

It look awesome when it works but the software is a bit flaky, and the glasses are damned uncomfortable to wear.

It actually helps playability on many games. For example in Tomb Raider III it's much easier to judge jumps because of the extra sense of depth you get.

Yeah, that gets you depth, but not having things come OUT of the screen.  There is a thread about this from not long ago... search on something like "forget popnmusic, this is badass" in EE.

Well the majority of the three prequels were made using 3D modelling software. So it might THEORETICALLY be possible to re-run the software from two different viewpoints (one for each eye) to make a 3D version.

That doesn't help with the actors, which should be the focal point of the movies.  They could easily have filmed it with this in mind for future use, but we have no way of knowing that.

Actually there is no reason why shutter glasses cannot make things appear to come out of the screen. All 3D works on the same basic principle which is to fool each eye into seeing a different image.

I just wish the glasses were more comfortable.

The movies/games/etc I have ever seen, and I go way out of my way to find them, almost never present foreground effects with shutter glasses.  It probably just doesn't work as well as polarized glasses.  I haven't researched far enough to know why yet.

Some LCD glasses are comfortable.  The LaserActive ones are awesome, though they darken a bit more than others do.  The SMS ones are pretty good too, though they too have a flaw in that the arms break off too easily.
