Monitor Question - PLEASE HELP
« on: September 17, 2005, 10:29:44 pm »
Hello,

I am new to arcade compenents, so hopefully this isnt too serious and someone can help me out - here goes - basically, I foolishly attempted to invert the monitor by switching around the 4 connectors to the yoke.  After a few tries where it didn't work, it smelt a little like burning, I immediately unplug.  however, now even when I put it back to normal, the screen doens't come on.  Did I just burn or short out the monitor??? please tell me no....

thanks, appreciate any advice/suggestions/nice comments to make me feel better for ruining my monitor

thanks for your quick response - well, I first did switch red and blue with each other, then yellow and green, because that seemed like the logical way to invert - however, it didn't seem to work, just showed the picture sideways and very small.

So, then I did just kind of switch them randomly, again foolishly, but didnt really think such a thing would blow something. Any way other than the screen not turning out that I can be sure what it is?

Yeah, you blew it.

LESSON ONE: IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, DON'T SCREW AROUND WITH MONITORS!

LESSON TWO: READ, READ, READ!  READ!  And READ SOME MORE!  If there are ever any doubts, ask here before screwing around!

I can only hope this was an old 19" with heavy burn, and not something like a 9200.

ok, well that seems to make sense, thanks again.  The monitor is 19'' and is pretty old, it has pacman burnin, but doesn't affect gameplay really and its the only one I have, so I definetly want to get it working again.  The model # is 19K4624 - can I pick up a DMM at radio shack or somewhere similar? I am trying to gauge how expensive it would be to go about trying to fix it, depending on the problem.

If it is the best case just a chassis problem, would I (with obviously very very little knowledge of this stuff) be able to do it?  I assume if it is the yoke and tube, it probably wouldn't even be worth fixing right, more than the whole thing is worth right?

Compiter guru, you dont happen to be in or around MA or CT do you? (or anyone else who may be willing to take a quick look at the problem for a few bucks and a free lunch) THANKS!

ok - I will certainly test the wires then....I do not see any arcade yokes on ebay at all, is that the common name for them?  There is however a manual for the k4600 monitors, perhaps I should pick that up to help out if I do need to replace the chassis or yoke.

I'm in Vermont, on the MA border.  If you could get up here I could bench it for you.

If you give up, I'll take it off your hands.  I'm looking for a damaged K4600 to repair one I've got.

wow, Vermont huh, love it up there - again, Im new - by "bench it" you mean take a look at it for repair?  I would definetly be interested in that, I dont really want to give up on it, unless it is completely hopeless - its the only one I have and would like to get it working - what would it cost me?  Also, what would I have to bring, the whole cab or just the monitor, yoke etc (and if just parts, how hard are they to ge out)?  I have a bum knee right now and cant really carry anything myself, but I could probably get someone to help me bring it up.

Benching a monitor pretty much means you put it on a bench and run it with a board.

If you come, you'll bring just the monitor.  And we won't do it at my house, we'll bring it where I work.  Did I mention I work for an arcade OP?

no, didn't mention that, good to know.  So, if I bring it and you figure out what is wrong - you would have the chassi, yoke or whatever the heck it needs to be fixed?  I am curious of the cost before taking out the monitor nd trecking up to Vermont.

No, I'm betting it's nothing I need parts for (save for maybe a couple caps).  Before you do trek all the way up here:

1) touch up *every* solder joint on the boards.  It'd really suck for you to trek up here just for a lousy cold solder joint.

2) ensure that you do have things hooked up correctly.

I wish you'd been able to test the monitor before doing the cap kit.  That way we'd know if it was working before the work you did on it or not.

gotcha - well, I think I can answer those, lets see.

I was trying to invert the screen for Double Dragon, which I am certain the solder joints are working on, because it came on fine before I messed with it - it was just upside down, so I am certain its not the board.
I am pretty sure things are hooked up just as they were when I was playing another game and it worked. The colors are marked, so Iam not messing that up.

I have no problem coming up to VT, its only about an hour for me and I can stop at Curtis All-American bbq in Putney on the way - which is worth the trip alone!!!

Ok - so what are the days and hours of the shop that I could bring it up and most importantly - how hard will it be for me to get the monitor out?

You wouldn't be bringing it up during shop hours!  I either wouldn't be there (service calls) or the boss would have a fit.  Have to be a weekend.

And you know....I just reread the thread.  I got you confused with TurboC--.  You're both working on K4600s.  I can't fix what you did.  Sorry about that!

OK - well, thats great!

Monitorguru if you are still willing to give me some direction - I will have the ohmeter readings within the next week and let you know.

Peale - do you have any cheap (working) k4600's for sale?

Sorry man!  I feel really bad about it too.  I thought you'd have an easy fix.  Sorry to confuse you two!

You'd do better to find yourself a K4900 instead - less problems.  There are several collectors in CT that could get you something easier than I could.  Ask in RGVAC.
