Best soccer game on a cab
« on: September 17, 2005, 02:11:53 pm »
Any opinions? I'm including consoles in this, but just the ones playable on a cab (SNES, NES, Genesis)

I love the Super Sidekicks games but hate that when I'm playing with a friend it's over in like 2 minutes. After many frustrating 1-0 or 0-0 games we tried a random sampling of SNES soccer games but most of them were insanely terrible. What I really want is a Super Sidekicks game with 10 minute halves...

Did you try Super Side Kick 2 or 3 . I play often and i didn't have the impression i can play only 2 minutes. May be something in the DIP switch?

Techmo World Soccer 96 , is very good too , i think.

maybe this is just nostalgia talking but Super Soccer for the SNES was always my favorite.  i was always argentina and of course "deigo" dribbled around everyone!  you should check it out.  very simple game, but still cool.

I like:

Sensible Soccer (Genesis)
Striker (SNES)
World Cup '90 (MAME)

There's a few other good one's in MAME, but I can't remember them  ::)

The indoor mode in Striker is superb, particularly fun in 2 player.  Many days when I should have been at school/college were whiled away playing that!  ;D

I hate to just run in here to flame. But....

It's soccer, (football to you non-americans) therefore there's no such thing as a good soccer game.  Soccer would have to be enjoyable itself for there to be a good game made about it. ;)

All joking aside, I've never found a soccer game I liked.  They all seem like lame graphic re-hashes of more popular (and more enjoyable) hockey games.  There are exceptions for more modern console games, but as for classic games, they all suck.

Well I disagree.  I'm not a massive fan but it is a good game.  I would agree that it is pretty much spoiled by big-earning puffs who fall over at a mere touch on the back.  But the game itself is great fun to play with mates.

Well you have a slight point.  There are a huge number of shite football games.  But then again that applies to all sports games, in fact all genres of games so the point is moot really.  There are a handful of crackers...think of Sensi - the graphics/sound were pretty crap even at the time, but everyone loved the game more than anything else.  Gameplay won through :)

Nintendo World Cup Soccer for the NES!!!! ;D ;D  That game is hilarious and fun.  Making the opponents eyes buldge out and flopping around like a fish while head butting are great pluses!

I really liked all incarnations of "Sensible Soccer", as well as the SNES version of FIFA '95 (awesome crowd noise, especially through a good stereo).  Turn the ref off, and let the brawling begin! :D

I like the Virtua Striker series.... VS2 (NAOMI1), VS3(NAOMI2), VS4(TRIFORCE)

There are some nice Virtua Striker ports available for Dreamcast.

Here are some screen shots to give you an idea (Virtua Striker 2 Dreamcast)

I never likes the VS series - until 4 (or maybe 3?) it was missing a button to tap the ball ahead.  It really needed that IMO.

flopping around like a fish while head butting

in our house, we called that "the inchworm" or "inchworming"

fun game, but you can blow out opponents with insane scores.  there were certain points, i'm not sure of the programming, but the opposing team would start, you'd steal it, run a certain route, and get one of those insanely fast shots, (after using all five supers in the half.)  you could do that EVERY time with good timing.

Yeah, Nintendo World Cup isn't particularly difficult until you get to the teams that are way faster than you, and you can't set the team to tackle after the third game or so........but it's still a lot of fun if you don't take it seriously. It's kinda the NBA Jam of soccer titles.

But let's face it......most classic sports title absolutely suck.

Personal preference, friend.  I love fighters.  Some people hate them.  That doesn't mean they suck, nor are they the best types of games.

Viva la difference.

Name some that don't then! ;D

The sports titles from that era that did well are all somewhat gimmicky and play very little like the sport they are trying to reproduce. I love NBA JAM, but it's hardly reminiscient of the game of basketball.

This is a whole thread about naming them.  Have you read it, or wuold you like me to just repeat all of the above posts?   ???

Once again: personal preference.  If you don't like sports games, there's no point entering a thread about sports games just to tell us you don't like them.  Cheers for the input.  Thanks and goodbye.

I have fifa 2005 set up on my cab using that gamepad emulation program.  Its pretty rad.  Theres some moves you cant do, due to the non-analog controllers but the game is too complicated anyways.

I also run FIFA2005 (PC Version) on my cabinet. It is a nice game which works fine without mouse and keyboard attached.

Major drawback is that it is single player only.

(A small problem is that the language selection screen opens in 800x600)
