Having played NHl 94 quite extensively.... Its the best of the SNES generation. Probably better then any NHL on PSX and N64....

But in the last couple years... NHL has been AMAZING!

Agreed, best game before 2004 (I had the genesis version).  I equally like 93 and 94.  I miss the features they yanked from 93 but was happy about the features they added for 94.  I think almost every night my freshman year in college (n64 was out at that time I believe or that might have been sophmore year) my next door dorm neighbor and I played 94.

You can play 95 or 97 on ea's site.

It could be the best, but it's also hard to argue against Tecmo Bowl and Baseball Stars.

The best sports game I have ever played, and I still play, Dusty Diamond's All Star Softball for the NES.  Just a cool idea of a game.  Take school yard softball, you have to pick the players from a lineup.

Tecmo would get lambasted in today's market with it's limited playbook and lacking balance.

There is only one way to play NHL 94... on a Sega Genesis.

I would have to say little league baseball and super tecmo bowl on nes for the best games category.

NHL 94 is still a classic though. I might have to break out my snes.

For those interested, there is a nice tribute site to NHL94 at www.nhl94.com.  The forum also has areas to discuss the other years in the series (talk is predominately about the Genesis versions).

In (hopefully) under two weeks, I'll be releasing my first public beta of NOSE, a game editor for the Genesis EA NHL series.  NOSE will allow just about anyone to make their own roster updates without the need for a hex editor.

NOSE preview screens can be at http://www.hexaddicts.com/nose/.

If you've got some cash to burn, you can by a "Genesis Flash Card Plus" from http://www.tototek.com/ to play a edited game on a real Genesis.

Haven't personally tested it myself, but the site owner (Evan) of NHL94.com has one and it works well enough.  You can read a little more about it here http://www.nhl94.com/html/editing/edit_bin_play_on_genesis.asp

I never played it, but I spent quality time with NHLPA 93 which EA also made. Looking at www.nhl94.com, I see that the graphics and gameplay are very similar. But EA also released NHL 93. What's the connection between these titles?

... time passes while pmc extends his lunch hour a tad and then locates this page which seems to 'splain it all...

I'll be looking for the SegaCD version I think...

Only the original releases NHL92 and EA Hockey (aka 91) emulate at full speed on a PS2 using PGEN.

94 has a bit too much lag for my liking, most likely caused by the more complex game AI engine(?)

It's probably better to emulate it though an XBOX.

Jackson was too sick--we had to ban the Raiders entirely.  Christian Okoye was a real force as well.

I agree with the NHL 94 call, but it was only good on the Genesis. I played it a couple times on the SNES and it was FAR inferior! Considering I'm a pro-Nintendo guy, that takes a lot for me to admit.

My all time favourite sports game was Dorakey No Kusaykiu on SNES.  It's a Japanese baseball game in which different animals play against each other, sponsored by a variety of well known US and Japanese drink companies.  Brilliant to look at, brilliant to play (even in Japanese it's easy to work out the controls).  And considering I'm someone who absolutely loathes sports games, that's saying something.

There have been many nights in my household staying up late playing this.  Sheer brilliance.
