Aluminum Flight CP (Illuminated)
« on: September 12, 2005, 09:29:21 pm »
Decided to give aluminum a try and build a small analog flightstick CP.  There's more info on my site.  Sorry the photos are from a cell phone.  I'll take some better ones soon.

It looks nice ...

What are the keys on the center? Admin?

The center keys are a USB numeric keypad.  The keys can be used as numbers or arrow keys.  The red LED above it indicates the NumLock.

I love it!  Is the wiring underneath exposed?

Can you please submit this as a project on the main page of the site.  There are not a whole lot of examples of good craftsmanship, in the desktop cp section, and most pages are from 5 years ago and just nasty looking.

Very nice work :)

Do you use this for MAME etc. or flight-sims?

Do you like the Happ flight stick?  Does it work well?

Are those original volcano switches, or did you make them somehow?

I second the volcano question.
They treated me like an animal and that's what I became.

Here's a link to how I made the green volcano button.

I'd be happy to make clear and different color button lens for people at cost.

First the stick is very heavy to move and the action is not consistent from axes.  For example, the action gets heavier in diagonal positions as opposed to horizontal or vertical positions.  The stick might loosen up over time, but for now it does limit the precision.  The 2nd problem is that the stick doesn't always center properly.  The stick will often stop just short of center, which can be annoying in some games.

It seems a lot of arcade sticks have similar problems.  I would probably be willing to fork out for a new analog stick (a lot of my faves use them) but from the ones I've used I wouldn't be 100% happy that I would get a stick I like.

Presumably the arcade hall-effect sticks would not have the same issues due to their nature.

I added a piece of Lexan to cover the back panel. I sanded the inside portion of the Lexan with a random orbit sander to create a diffused glass look. The outside is left clear which gives an opaque mirror like finish similar to the top of the CP.
