A device for those who have already spent $400 on a high capacity ipod and feel the need to drop another couple hundred on a smaller one, in the hopes that some chick at the gym will notice his 12" pythons while she's staring at it wondering where his ipod went.

I enjoy being about 2.5 years behind the gadget curve.  I recently bought my first flashable mp3 player, 256meg I think.

Until that point, I had been using my mp3 discman, which still works and I still quite like.

I was still using my 128 MB Nomad until just recently. It mysteriously stopped working. Good excuse as any to get an iPod. :)

Hell no, it's a reason to upgrade to the latest and cheapest 2.5 year old device, like a nice 256meg flashable player.

Stay far enough behind the curve that you can empty your spare change bowl to buy the devices, but close enough that you are still reasonably current.

I didn't say a new iPod. I'd be happy with one of the earlier monochrome models.

It definitely sets the standard for high capacity flash based players. That said, I will not be replacing my 20GB iPod anytime soon. If anything, I would be going for a larger capacity HDD based player. Mainly, because then I could have my entire music library backed up, and still have some extra capacity to use as portable hard drive storage, an unintended benefit of having the player, that I never anticipated when I purchased it.

I want one of these (see conga board).

I'd prefer the 20gb version though.

I've had a 256meg Diamond Rio, a portable CDR mp3 discman, and a set-top box that plays CDs.  A CDs worth of mp3s is just not enough.  That only holds about 10 albumns.  Since I have a wide variety of musical tastes that is not enough for me.

You can find 1st gen ipods for pretty cheap if you know where to go, but expect some issues with them, like papercuts from the scroll wheel :)

The big reason I want an ipod is the the storage space and playlists.    Like when I am on my motorcycle I'd create a playlist  of guitar rock since that is basically the only thing you can hear through the wind.  If I am just relaxing at home I would have classical and blues playlists.  When at work I'd have modern rock and punk.

Zero_Hour has a good point.  I didn't realize how nice my 1gb flash drive was.  I use it all the time now and wish I had something larger.  Especially now since my arcade cabinet is not networked (the computer hates network cards for some reason).  I've also been using my flash drive to store bookmarks so I have the same reference bookmarks at work and home.

Since the ipod has a pretty decent color screen now they should had in GPS :)

I know, it was always such a pain to have to swap the CD every ten albums.   :P

Ten albums is nearly a full day of listening.  I can deal with swapping a CD once a day.  It's better than working for a full week to earn the money to buy the high capacity player.

I won't be getting one, even when I eventually replace my iPod.  I've got a 30 GB iPod and I have to clean it off to make space on a pretty regular basis.  I use it as a mass storage device a lot, in addition to music and audiobooks.  I'd love to have one, though.  If they could even get 20 GB into that small a space I'd be willing to sacrifice the space.  As it is, when I do upgrade I'll end up getting a regular sized on, but it'll have much higher capacity.  At least 60 GB (maybe more considering I've got a 3G that's about to get its battery replaced for free so unless it breaks any time soon I'm doin' pretty damned good as it is.

I like being able to use CDRs full of MP3 in the car.  For me that is the biggest win.  You don't have to take care of the CD because a blank is like a dime at retail now and that's several hours of driving.  Sometimes I won't change a CD for two weeks.

I have several mp3/CD players. all the same. I bought them in bulk off eBay
I love em except when I drive I have to sit it on my lap or it skips.

I only use em for audio books. I can get most any book on 2 Cd's and about 3 or 4 hrs on 2 AA batteries ( rechargeable, I keep 6 spare batteries in the car)

I would like to find something cheap that will not skip over small bumps

I have been looking for something that will use a Compact Flash
any idea's
something like $100.00 or less

There's a pretty big difference between having full library access to your music and having 120 songs on a CD in the car, though.  What if you want to listen to Blue Light from Bloc Party's Silent Alarm album?  Are all your files named like "Block_Party_Silent_Alarm_Blue_Light.mp3" so that they will get burned in the right order on the CD?  And if so, what if you want to listen to Tom Petty?  Do you have to press the skip button 85 times?

Can you browse folders on the little display?  The CD player in my car, for example, will play MP3s, but it treats them exactly the way it treats audio CD tracks.  It just plays them one after another (it does display id3 tags at least).  So if I have 150 songs on a single disc and I can't browse them except by hitting the "next track" button.  That's what I mean by hitting the button 85 times to get to Tom Petty.

I haven't looked at car stereos in a long time, though, so...

Nevertheless, I'd guess that one would pay upwards of $150 for a unit that could browse through folders and play specific albums on request and such.  At that point you you're just about into iPod territory anyway.  Actually, if you include the Shuffle (which has a higher capacity than a CD and shares the characteristic of beeing screenless with a CD) you've already spent more than you would for an iPod.

I have never looked into the more advanced features of mine, but it does give you some limited browsing.  It also supports m3u playlists and wma format.

If I get that nano through the conga I will probably get the digicam adaptor so I can download pics off my digicam when on a trip.  I only have a 256meg car.  It holds 80 high quality jpegs, 160 medium quality.  But since it is only 3 megapixels I usually keep it on high quality and scale down later on my computer if needed.

The Nano has different inputs (or at least different configs) than the full sized iPod Photo (and most others) so make sure the digicam adaptor is specifically made for the Nano.  That goes for pretty much every other iPod accessory too (except headphones).   There's a review at iPodlounge.com.  I'd give the specific link, but the site didn't feel like loading when I typed this.

Dude, what's Stingray doing?

I dunno man.  He's been sitting in that room with all those rubber chickens laying around him for at least an hour now.  It's almost like he's arranged them that way.  Creepy!

Why is he holding that one to his cheek and talking to it?

Pffft!  That's nothing!  You shoulda been here when he had one up to his mouth and he was licking the beak and stuff!

WHOA!  Should we call someone?

And tell 'em what?  Stingray loves rubber chickens in a way that's not natural for man or beast?  I bet going postal looks like playing hopscotch compared to what'll happen if we take away his rubber chickens!

Good point.  I feel like I need a shower now.

It won't help, I already tried.  The vision just "stays" with ya....it's like I need steel wool for my mind!
You’re always in control of your behavior. Sometimes you just control yourself
in ways that you later wish you hadn’t

You should have seen where it was before he licked it.
