Have any of you guys tried Daphne?
« on: January 08, 2003, 05:02:14 pm »
http://www.daphne-emu.com/

It's an emulator to run laser disc games in your cabinet or on your pc.  I haven't tried it because I don't have any mpeg files of the original discs.

What I do have are 2 original discs, an astron belt and a Dragon's Lair II, and if my limited knowledge of the law is correct, I should be ok to download copies of these mpegs, since I own the original discs (this sound right?).  Now I just need to find a source for the mpegs, I am going to try some of the tombstoners and hope they might have them.

I tried daphne for DL... but didn't inhale =)

I don't think DL II is emulated in daphne (although I may be wrong)

IANAL either.. but if you were that worried about it you could buy the DVD-ROM from digital leisure and rip your own copies of the mpegs (for dragonslair 1/space ace/etc )... it's hard to know what legal anymore with DMCA outlawing anything big corporations want to regarding intelluctual property use/misuse...  what you stated sounds fair, and doubt it would cause an international uproar =P (again IANAL YMMV)

Some tombstoners will do them, but most won't as there is a vendor currently selling the DVD-ROMS (i.e. flirts further with piracy...)

the mpeg images do show up on newsgroups frequently and there's a site where fans of mame go...

good luck,

rampy

PS generally asking for rom/mpeg locations is frowned upon here, FYI... but you weren't really asking ... just rheotorically speaking about what you were giong to do "out loud"... =) *shrug*

Its GREAT!   (and yes I've tried it)

SpaceAce and DL dvdrom (not the dvd version) can easily be converted over.  The software that comes with each SUCK but runs like a charm with Daphne.

I've also aquired a few sets.  Nothing great, but they work well... just seems like there is a reason that only a few got popular.  You can find them on alt.binaries.emulators.misc every so often.  Takes about 1gig for each game.

Now here's a question I've wondered for a while. When you are using the MPEG files that have been taken from an LD or DVD, or that you may have downloaded, are they fullscreen and if so, what, kind of quality are we talking? I mean the DVD/LD videos are BEAUTIFUL to say the least. So it would be a dang shame if the MPEGs were any less. The awe of these great games were their beauty.... and I'd hate to lose that.

I have only seen one Mpeg - Dragon's Lair in full screen and it looked really sharp.

I very highly recommend Daphne.  It plays Dragons Layer and Space Ace and all the other Laser Disc games perfectly!  Just search for the MPEGs.  They are out there you just have to look a bit.  A good starting point is mameworld.net.......if you follow links properly you can find them....

Go ahead and download them.  It's SO worth it!  And regarding the quality....The quality is great!  You will not be disappointed with the quality.

If you look in the right place, you can find all the MPEGS seperated into different RAR pieces so you don't have to download a 1 gig file all at once.

Anyway you dice it, 1 gig downloading through 56K at about 5kb/s max is just plain annoying.  Maybe I'll give in and buy me a 9 DVD set of all those N64, NES, SNES, Amiga, Laser Disc images, pretty much any emulation known to man...etc!  You know the place I'm talking about.

That just means that one of your rars didn't finish downloading correctly.  If memory serves me right they should each be about 19.5 megs exactly except the very last rar.  Go back and check.  If you aren't getting them in split rars then it's a lost cause.  1.4 gigs is simply too huge a file to download unmanaged and get in one piece.

If all you really want to do is play Space Ace or Dragon's Lair, I would highly suggest buying the DVD's made by Digital Leisure.  I bought a 3 pack DVD set from them for $60, Space Ace, Dragon's Lair, and Dragon's Lair II.  Once you have those, there is a small command prompt utility made to rip the MPEGs off of them.  It's called DVD2Daphne.  Just do a google search for it.  Anyways, once you have those DVD's, just use the DVD2Daphne and it will make all the MPEGs for you at very high quality :)

I do really want to play it, since the product is available commercially, I am very happy to be able to purchase it.  It is pricey for a 30 minute dvd ($60) so I want to make sure I am buying the correct thing.

There is a 20th anniversary dvd available here:

http://www.digitalleisure.com/cgi-bin/online/store.php

that includes Dragons Lair 1 and 2 as well as Space Ace and some deleted scenes.  Is this the DVD you are talking about?  Will this one work?

No That is not the correct one.  Those are DVD-Video discs.  What you want are the DVD-ROM versions.  The DVD-Video ones will NOT work with DVD2Daphne program.  And don't get the ones that say PS2 or XBOX compatible.  Those are all DVD-Video.  On that page, look for this:

PC DVD-ROM: DL/SA/DL2 Three Pack

That's the one you want.  It's 3 DVD-ROMs.

It's worth the $60 :)

You may want to check with your local library and/or video rental store(s) to see if they have it available to check-out / rent before you buy it.   ;D

Probably not at the "big-uns" (Blockbuster / hollywood); but, you may have luck at smaller independent shops - especially if they also offer game rental.

Thanks so much. I'll be getting the MPEGS in a few days. Tired of hunting for them so I'm gonna Paypal my way to happiness, I suppose. haha

Swweeeeeeett!! Not that looks great! What r your system specs and how does it perform? I only have an Athlon 900, 256 ram..... think that'll do? I sure hope so, even with a little framedrop it'll be great. My Mamecab is going to be in the works soon and it just wouldn't be complete without the original Dragon's Lair running too.....

I thought they had system specs at daphne's site.

Quoted system requirements don't mean much to me ever since I got Deus Ex and they claimed it would run on a system waaay crappier than what I had. Well it ran like an old man to say the least. Real world experience is what I like to hear. Anyway, thanks a bunch. Hope to be playing with it by next week.

This is actually the thread I wanted to reply to but I replied to another daphne thread...oops.

I have all the daphne roms on my harddrive shared via edonkey on a dedicated T1. You can get them fast.
