Obsolete Computer
« on: September 08, 2005, 11:29:06 am »
Reasons I'm Keeping My Obsolete Computer

11. I find it hard to concentrate without 20 fans running.

10. I needed a home for my dust bunnies.

9. My plans to open a computer museum, might just get venture Capital someday.

8. Three more and I can host a LAN party.

7. The command line will make a comeback, and I want to be ready.

6. Maybe the burglars will steal the old one instead of the new one.

5. When you get a new friend, do you get rid of the old ones?

4. Where else could you get a space heater that also runs Seti@home.

3. It's not obsolete, it's previously functional.

2. So I can complain about how slow the new Microsoft operating system runs on it.

1. You never know when your first three computers go down and you need a fourth back up.

I'm right there with you. I don't think there's a closet in my house that doesnt have at least one old computer in it. One of them has nothing but old computers and computer parts.

7 computers, all working within the last year, 4 obsolete:

Dell Notebook P4 @ ???
IBM Notebook Centrino at a couple of gig
Dell Desktop P4 @ 2.8GHz

Home assembled desktop Dual Celeron @ 400MHz
Dell Notebook P2 @ 300MHz
Toshiba Notebook 486DX4 @ 75MHz (really more like a 486 @ 25MHz, sort of)
Home assembled desktop 486 @ 33MHz

I don't even want to think about the number of mice, monitors, modems, network cards, etc.

I have these plastic 3 high drawers under my desk.

1 drawer... old mother boards
2 drawer... misc. cards
3 drawer... misc. cables

in this room alone I have 5 old computers not being used, 3 15" monitors, several keyboards and mice, extra speakers and tons of other stuff.

I really shouldn't check out the closets or shed......

Oh, you had to mention the shed. I don't even remember what's out in mine. There's some computer stuff for sure though.

Then we could start talking about game consoles. There are probably a good 20 or so in my house.

Dude, you don't even want to see my console list.  It's like Stingray's, but more packed with ancient consoles that I haven't used in years, if ever, many of them multiples or revisions.

Which of the really old ones do you have that I don't? I'm sure once you say I'll slap my head and say "oh yeah, why didn't I think of that?" but off the top of my head, I can't really think of many. Master System... Hmm... Having a brain cramp I guess. Note that I'm not including "computers" like the Commodore 64, Vic 20, Apple ][, Atari 800 etc. Those would make a separate list by themselves.

Right off the top of my head, SMS and VB... tons of dedicated pong units I can't name... Tg16, TurboDuo, TurboExpress, PCE, LaserActive... Saturn... Dreamcast...

...not sure if you count revisions, I generally don't but probably have every revision of most consoles.  Definitely have SMS 1 and 2, all revisions of the standalone Genesis, tons of variants of the 2600...

I used to actively collect console stuff pretty hardcore, but not so much since I have gotten into arcade cabs and pins.

**Slaps head** TG-16 & VB. I knew I forgot at least a couple obvious ones. The Dreamcast should be on my list. Forgot that one. Don't own a Saturn, but like the TG-16 & VB, I'm sure I'll buy one when one comes along at the right price.

Get a model 2 Saturn and install a modchip.  It's a CD drive ribbon cable bypass with two solder points, one to the +5v and one to itself (odd, I know).   I have most of the Saturn library but I will only play backups of my games for preservation purposes.

I'll keep that in mind, but I'm not actively looking for a Saturn. Is that one worth seeking out? I only ever played a Saturn a couple times, and then it was only store demos. I don't remember really being overwhelmed.

The system I wish I still had was an "Imagination Machine" (http://www.tcp.com/~lgreenf/apfpage.htm). It was a rather uninspired cartidge based game console mated to a keyboard and tape drive. I wouldn't be the geek I am today had I not hand assembled code to run on that machine.

Really rare beast but amazingly capable for the time.

Absolutely.  It is still one of the systems I play the most and I've had mine since release day.  Some of the games are very unique and the later games are breathtaking in the 32 bit era.
