Issues with wrapping cables.

Well, my brother in California is an industrial designer by trade. He is entering a contest for finding a new solution when it comes to organizing computer cables, one that can be built into a desk. He thought of wrapping the excess cable for each piece of a computer system around a cylinder or spool and having plates seperating the wires so that you can have an area for each cable from each piece of the computer system. This prompts the question, will there be any problem with wrapping cables with current going through them around a metal cylinder? We don't want to make an electromagnet or anything. Also, will this problem be solved by using some sort of composite? Is there any other problems you guys can think of?

Organizing computer cables is a problem I think many of us have to deal with. The main problem for people like me is that once you have something nice and organized, tied up or whatever. You need to add/remove a cable here or there. Makes keeping things organized a real pain in the butt. So when i type at my keyboard I try just to avoid the rats nest under my desk. One real solution is to build a desk complete with surge protectors installed, also it may be nice to be able to plug into usb,etc. into the desk. basically to remove the sight of cords draping all over the desk making it look like a weeping willow.

Maybe this is just me. Every desk I've ever owned had the side with the cables flowing down it against the wall. What I can't see I don't care about.

Yeah, the cable managment system is just the topic for the contest itself. I was just worried about the effects of wrapping cables around a metal cylinder in order to get rid of the excess would have on the computer itself. Just seeing if anybody had any objections to this theory. If you need a simple illustration to get the point I can email it or something.

In an attempt to answer your question in a serious manner, I don't think that wrapping the cables around metal would cause a problem, but if you think it might, why not just use plastic instead?

If you are going to wrap cords around a cylinder it just sounds like you are decorating with a cords theme. I think the contest is geared to see what cleaver ways one can hide/eliminate the sight of cords itself.

Flat out best post ever.  I don't think I'll ever see anything that'll top that one. 


I dunno what the goal of this project is, but it DOES sound as if you're just gonna wrap up stuff around the outside, instead of hiding 'em from sight.

Only issue I can see is all the wire around a metal cylinder MIGHT pick up or increase interference in the speakers of the PC.

I take a piece of PVC and run it through the tablesaw.  Splits nicely to allow stuffing the cable inside, and goes right back to its original shape.  Also, the split allows you to stick a screwdriver in there and screw it to the side of the desk or underside of the desk if it's in a visible location.  Get the pretty colors if you hate the white stuff

I want a cheap and nice way to deal with the cords...

I have computer, vcr, deak light, phone, scanner, printer, another laptop, chargers, and so on on my desk....

some of the cables needs to be loose (like I need to slide my scanner in and out...) some others can be tighter...

looping it around a cylinder... (I might not be thinking right...) but doesn't seem to be able to solve my problem...

what if I want to take the light out ?? and the light cable is in the middle of the cylinder looping mixing with other cables ??

also, like my power stations, the cables are quite thick and not very flexable....

ok... I think I'm not making sense anymore....

Make the desk the power station. Everything should be able to plug into the desk. Try to make everything reachable and hidden.

I've gotta say, while the site is fairly nice looking, that crap brown is an eyesore, and requiring flash and having it open in a SEPARATE window is a bit off-putting
